Description
Claude posting for Erik Darling.
What happens
#6674 fixed the Overview lanes, tempdb, the Query Store Regressions grid and the Collection Health headers at 1366x768. Three chart tabs and a few labels still do not fit.
- On tabs with a large legend, the legend sits inside the 150 px chart row. The plot area that is left is about 35 to 45 px tall.
- On those short plots, the top y tick label is drawn over the y-axis title.
- Some axis titles still lose their unit.
- Some labels and one-line captions are cut off at the edges.
What I saw
Darling Viewer 3.11.0-nightly.20261027.595 (99cbad9), maximized in a 1366x768 RDP session at 100% scaling, Past day and Past week ranges:
| Screen | Problem |
|---|---|
| Blocking, Trends | Lock wait plot is about 45 px tall under an 8-entry legend. The "398.17" tick covers "Lock wait ms/s". The second title reads "Blocking event…" |
| File I/O, File I/O Latency | Both plots are about 35 px tall under 10-entry legends. The "302.99" tick covers the title. The titles read "Read Laten…" and "Write Laten… (m", so the unit is lost |
| Queries, Performance Trends | All four plots are about 35 px tall when the legend has a restart marker row ("baseline discontinuity at … (restart)"). The top ticks ("544.46", "0.58", "1.42", "408.98") cover "Duration ms/s" and "Executions/sec" |
| Queries, Performance Trends | The "Source: …" caption above each chart is one line, centred, and cut at both ends: : raw (one point per collection) — data begins 2026-10-26 10:03; the store no longer holds the rest of this w |
| Queries, Query Store Regressions | The two caption lines above the banner are cut at the right edge ("…at least 1 s of CPU", "…can come only from a run before the window th") |
| FinOps, Utilization | The CPU card labels from #6667 are cut: "Avg SQL Server (", "P95 SQL Server (", "Max SQL Server" |
| Time range menu, Calendar list | Each label runs into its duration: "Today7h 52m", "Yesterday1d", "Week to Date1d" |
These were fine at 1366x768: the Overview lanes, tempdb, the Regressions grid columns, the Collection Health headers.
Where
ChartLayout.MinPlotHeight(150) applies to the whole chart row, and the legend is inside the row. The minimum needs to apply to the plot area, or the legend needs its own row outside the minimum.ChartAxisTitle.FitandMinimumTickGeneratorare inChartStyle. The fitted title and the top tick label are not checked against each other on a short plot.- FinOps Utilization CPU card: the label column width in the card template. The captions: the source-note TextBlocks on the Performance Trends and Regressions tabs have no wrapping.
Suggested fix
- Give the plot area, not the row, the 150 px minimum. Or put the legend beside the plot, or collapse it, when it has more than a few entries.
- When the plot is short, keep the top tick label clear of the axis title: drop the top label, or move the title.
- Let the captions wrap, and replace the em dash in the source caption with plain punctuation. Widen the CPU label column or wrap the label.
- In the Calendar list, put a space or a right-aligned column between the label and its duration.
How to verify
At 1366x768, on a server with about 10 database files and a restart in the window: Blocking Trends, File I/O Latency and Performance Trends each show a plot at least 100 px tall. No tick label covers an axis title, every unit is visible, and no caption is cut off.
