See #479 for more details.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected derived-class member offsets when a base class has reusable tail padding, keeping reported and generated layouts consistent across supported configurations, including Microsoft mode with stricter base-class alignment.
  • Tests
    • Added regression coverage comparing reported and actual member offsets for aligned base classes across C++11 and C++20 configurations.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

IL lowering now handles base-class tail padding and subobject-type selection on non-IA-64 builds. A regression test compares front-end and lowered offsets for a derived-class member with an aligned base.

Changes: Base-class subobject layout

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update base-class subobject lowering
src/lower_il.c
Base fields are created on all ABIs. Subobject-type selection and retention account for tail padding outside the IA-64-only path.

The regression test compares front-end and lowered offsets for an aligned base class. Expected outputs record compiler warnings and test results. The change note describes the layout mismatch.

Maybe track down which change enabled the IA-64 ABI behavior and refer to that?

+C-generating back end: support for tail-padding reuse
+
+The IA64 ABI requires in some cases that derived class members be allocated
+in the tail padding of base class subobjects, but the C-generating back end
+was unable to support tail-padding reuse and thus did not comply with this
+requirement. This limitation has now been lifted, and the default setting
+for TARG_REUSE_TAIL_PADDING has been changed to TRUE for C-generating back
+end configurations with IA64_ABI set to TRUE. In this configuration, the
+members of base classes with reusable tail padding are "promoted" into the
+derived class in the generated C code and member access expressions
+designating such promoted members are adjusted accordingly. The previous
+class layout in the generated code can be retained by explicitly setting
+TARG_REUSE_TAIL_PADDING to FALSE.

It seems from this commit it was intentional to tail-padding reuse only for IA64-ABI.

Then this commit adjusted the front end layout calculation:

+Consider:
+
+  struct B {
+    alignas(16) int i;
+  };
+  struct D : B {
+    int j;
+  };
+
+When calculating the size of a base class, MSVC ignores explicitly-specified
+alignment requirements that are more strict than platform-specific defaults.
+On ARM64 platforms, that default is 8 bytes, and thus the sizes of both B and D
+are 16 bytes in the example above. The front end now emulates this bug in
+Microsoft mode.

It seems like this may have manifested for IA64 ABI as a result of an (accidental?) combination of these two.

Run the regression with the non-IA-64 ABI.

CI builds use IA64_ABI=1, so they compile out the changed layout check. Add a C-generating CI configuration with IA64_ABI=0. Run the Microsoft-mode case with a target and packing alignment that produce a smaller base subobject, and assert that the derived member uses that space.

Preserve derived alignment when promoting a base

In non-IA-64 Microsoft mode with pack(1), struct alignas(16) B { char c; }; struct D : B { char d; }; promotes B’s members into D. The generated C type for D has alignment 1 instead of 16, so its objects can be underaligned and incompatible with the front-end layout.

Emit the required alignment on the enclosing C type when promotion removes the base type’s alignment.
