Stream pull request diffs to disk, and prune CI's uploaded runs [] - #466
The forge service held a pull request's tests/ diff in memory several times over: as git's output, decoded, stripped, and split into lines. The diff is now processed in a streamed fashion. Since the diff now costs disk rather than memory, its default limit rises to 512 MiB.
A failing CI leg's upload held every test's .rt.tar.gz (edgy creates a .rt.tar.gz for every test, this can be useful for analysis but is not useful for AcknowlEDG Forge and results in larger amounts of dating needing to be stored and processed. Now, before uploading, the leg now runs the new edg-prune-test-run (edgtest.prune_run_archives), which removes .rt.tar.gz files not associated with a changes.elist file.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
After a test failure, unnecessary replay data and suites without named test changes are removed before partial results are uploaded. Named test archives and scan results are preserved.
Improvements
Pull requests can include tests/ diffs up to 512 MiB, up from 64 MiB. Large diffs are streamed to disk during processing, reducing the need to hold them in memory.
Documentation
Updated documentation to reflect the larger diff limit and how diffs are handled.

Walkthrough
Forge now streams pull-request diffs to disk for pattern extraction and fingerprinting, with the maximum diff size set to 512 MiB. The change also adds test-run archive pruning and invokes it after failed CI tests. Several CI jobs now use an updated pinned runner image.
Changes: Forge Diff Streaming
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Stream diffs and enforce limits dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/workspace.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_safety.py
Git output streams through a bounded sink. Workspaces.diff incrementally decodes output and writes it to a destination file. Tests cover output limits, decoding, cancellation, and diff parsing.
Stage and process pull-request diffs dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/processor.py, dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/config.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/README.md, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/SANDBOXING.md, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/test_state.py
The processor derives patterns and fingerprints from the staged diff. The configured maximum and documented default increase to 512 MiB. The state test checks the setting name in the error.
Test-Run Pruning

Prune failed test runs dev_tools/pylibs/edgtest/__init__.py, dev_tools/bin/edg-prune-test-run, dev_tools/tests/test_edgtest_prune.py, .github/workflows/ci-toolchain.yml
The pruning function removes unlisted results and suites and reports counts. The command validates the run directory and prints those counts. CI runs the command after test failure and continues to result upload if pruning fails.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 0e58d
Fix pruning of runs with nested changes files and enforce the staged diff’s size limit before merging. A large single-line diff also remains a memory risk for the Forge service.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 0e58d
Streaming reduces routine memory use, but the larger input limit is not matched by limits on decoded content and temporary files. Crafted pull requests could disrupt review processing; existing isolation limits the wider impact.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The raised diff allowance is not an end-to-end resource budget. The 512 MiB check counts raw Git output before replacement decoding; malformed UTF-8 text can produce approximately 1.5 GiB of staged content. The builder copies that content into a 512 MiB temporary filesystem, while service-side pattern parsing still reads complete attacker-sized lines. A contributor whose pull request is processed can therefore submit accepted input that exceeds downstream storage budgets or creates substantial service-memory pressure. Normal exception cleanup contains failed attempts but does not prevent this availability impact. The normalization behavior existed previously; the eightfold increase materially worsens its exposure.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified attack requires control of content in a pull request that this deployment processes. Its supported impact is resource pressure on the shared review service or builder, potentially affecting other processed reviews. The inspected change does not demonstrate credential access, privilege escalation, or escape to unrelated deployments.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Non-NUL text containing malformed UTF-8 can reach Git's textual diff output. Replacement decoding expands that output after the raw-byte check; accepted content can consequently exceed the builder's temporary-storage capacity. Very long lines also defeat the assumption that file iteration always uses small memory allocations. This is the resource-exhaustion path represented by ARCH-RESOURCE-001, not a reproduced exploit.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The raw-output check runs before each sink write, and overflow, cancellation, or sink failure terminates Git. Builder execution retains read-only worktree access and writable staging only; output validation remains between builder completion and review publication.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Each processing attempt owns unique staging. Empty results and exceptions remove it, restart recovery removes interrupted staging, and successful output is renamed into its run directory. In-flight tracking and a semaphore limit concurrent processing; failed attempts are recorded with bounded retry accounting. These controls contain ordinary failures but are not substitutes for downstream resource budgets.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Enforce a budget on normalized bytes actually written, bound line-oriented parsing or reject oversized lines, and account for builder temporary copies and concurrent jobs when selecting the accepted diff limit. These measures would make the streaming resource guarantee end-to-end rather than limited to raw subprocess output.

Explanation
The title names two changes: streaming pull request diffs to disk, and pruning CI's uploaded runs. The changeset covers both. The forge diff path now writes to a staging file and streams bytes, with the default limit raised to 512 MiB. The new edg-prune-test-run CLI and prune_run_archives remove .rt.tar.gz archives and suites before upload. The title is specific and accurate, and it is a single sentence. It lists two changes, so it is slightly long, but it covers the main work.

Bound diff-line reads before deriving sparse patterns.
Text-mode iteration reads a complete line before it yields it. A diff line near the 512 MiB limit can therefore be held in memory at once, and changes_patterns may create another large string with rstrip. With two concurrent pull requests, this can exhaust the service container's memory.
Use a bounded iterator that keeps the header or relevant prefix and discards the rest of an overlong line. Apply the same bound in build_diff_files; that path also reads complete lines before writing them to temporary files.
+MAX_DIFF_LINE_CHARS = 64 * 1024+++def _bounded_lines(path: Path) -> Iterator[str]:+ '''Yield each UTF-8 line with a bounded prefix.'''+ with open(path, encoding = 'utf-8') as handle:+ while line := handle.readline(MAX_DIFF_LINE_CHARS):+ if not line.endswith('\n'):+ while (rest := handle.readline(MAX_DIFF_LINE_CHARS)) and (+ not rest.endswith('\n')):+ pass+ yield line+

changes_patterns and in build_diff_files: replace complete-line reads with a
bounded iterator that retains the needed line prefix and discards the remainder
of overlong lines. Preserve normal line handling and ensure both paths avoid

Count the encoded bytes against the diff limit, not only the raw bytes.
max_output counts raw Git stdout. The sink then decodes invalid UTF-8 to U+FFFD, which is three bytes each, and writes the result. A diff of max_diff_bytes raw bytes that is mostly invalid UTF-8 can write up to about three times that to pull-request.diff. The limit documented as the disk bound is then exceeded. The error text also reports the raw limit. The sink should enforce the same limit on the bytes it writes.
Suggested fix
decoder = codecs.getincrementaldecoder('utf-8')(errors = 'replace')
async with self.lock(repository):
with open(destination, 'xb') as handle:
+ written = 0
# Decoded and encoded again so that what isn't UTF-8 is replaced:
# ...
def write(chunk: bytes) -> None:
- handle.write(decoder.decode(chunk).encode())+ nonlocal written+ data = decoder.decode(chunk).encode()+ written += len(data)+ if written > self._max_diff_bytes:+ raise _OutputTooLarge()+ handle.write(data)
The sink runs inside _communicate_bounded's try. Raising _OutputTooLarge there terminates the process and propagates to the existing except _OutputTooLarge in diff. Valid UTF-8 diffs keep their current size. Diffs with invalid bytes are rejected once their written size exceeds the limit. This matches the documented contract. The final decoder.decode(b'', final = True) flush can add a few bytes past the limit. That is bounded and can be counted in the same way.
