Important

Don't merge this before doc-detective@5 is on npm. The default version won't resolve until then. Until then, the self-test jobs in test.yml run against v5-rc. Drop that override at GA.

Summary

The breaking major that matches CLI 5. It targets main and is built on the v1.7 PR (#82), so its diff includes that commit until that PR merges. The second commit is the v2 change.

Breaking

  • exit_on_fail defaults to "true", and version defaults to 5.
  • Removes the ios input, the runTests branch for CLI 2, and the issueUrl duplicate output.

Non-breaking

  • A pure, exported decideOutcome({ exitCode, exitOnFail }) makes the decision: 0 passes, 1 fails unless exit_on_fail is false, and 2 always fails. It's table tested. Results load whenever the file exists, so the issue and PR steps still run on 1.
  • Arguments pass as an array, so paths with spaces work.
  • Declares the issue_url and pull_request_url outputs, which the README already documented.
  • README and action.yml lose the stale runCoverage and command text, and the README gains an upgrade section and an exit code table.

Decisions to check

  • A missing results file always fails, even on exit 1 with exit_on_fail: false. npx network errors and Node crashes also exit 1, so treating that as a test failure would turn a run that never happened green.
  • Exit codes off the contract fail closed, such as 130 from an interrupt.
  • Exit 0 with failed specs passes, and logs a warning. Dropping the results check means a config with exitOnFail: false, or an explicit version: 4, stays green when tests fail. That includes an explicit exit_on_fail: true, which used to fail on v1. The brief says 0 passes, so I added only the warning. Refusing versions below 5 would close the CLI 4 case, if you want it.
  • An empty exit_on_fail counts as on, so a workflow passing an empty expression doesn't silently opt out.

Run folder

The Action passes --output-dir beside --output, in RUNNER_TEMP. CLI 5 otherwise writes .doc-detective/runs to the working directory, which dirties the checkout and makes create_pr_on_change open a PR on every run.

  • This overrides any outputDir in a user's config, and reports such as junit and markdown go to RUNNER_TEMP too. The README says so.
  • CLI 4's parser is strict and rejects the flag, so the Action leaves it out when version stays below 5, such as 4, ^4, or <5. An empty version and dist-tags still get it, so a linked CLI older than 5 fails with a usage error. A dist-tag that points at CLI 4 fails the same way.

Skipped

From the plan's v2 list, out of scope for this PR:

  • The $SUMMARY token and new default issue_body
  • Reusing an open issue in create_issue_on_fail
  • A stable PR branch, updating its open PR, and base from GITHUB_BASE_REF or GITHUB_REF_NAME
  • git commands honoring working_directory
  • The pr_paths input and its screenshot warning
  • The results_path and summary_path outputs
  • Pointing test-current-release.yml at v5-rc

Testing

  • npm test: 36 pass, 0 fail. npm run typecheck passes, and dist/ is rebuilt.
  • Ran the built dist/index.js on Windows against the local CLI 5 build, with spaces in the input and temp paths: passing spec exit 0 and job green, failing spec exit 1 and job red, the same with exit_on_fail: false and job green, and a missing input exit 2 and job red. artifacts/.doc-detective.json also loads under CLI 5. After the --output-dir change, those runs left no .doc-detective folder in the workspace.
  • Not run: the Actions workflows on hosted runners, or a real issue or PR creation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The action defaults to Doc Detective 5 and accepts a version, range, or tag; leave it empty to use an installed version.
    • Issue and pull request URLs are available as outputs. Issue bodies support prompts and mentions, and oversized results are truncated to GitHub’s limit with a workflow-run link.
  • Bug Fixes
    • exit_on_fail now defaults to true. Set it to false to allow test failures without failing the workflow; invalid or incomplete runs still fail. Result-loading errors include CLI output.
  • Documentation
    • Updated v2 examples and guidance, including replacement issue inputs and deprecated aliases. The ios input is no longer available.

hawkeyexl and others added 2 commits November 4, 2026 09:49
Make v1.7 the last v1 release, so the floating v1 tag can't cross into CLI 5.

- Run the CLI with ignoreReturnCode, delete any stale output file first, and
  still load results. A missing results file still fails the job. A non-zero
  exit still fails it too, now after the results, issue, and PR steps.
- Include stderr in crash diagnostics, since CLI 5 logs there.
- Default version to 4. Refuse latest, and any version or range that can
  install 5 or later, with a pointer to @v2. Empty still means the local CLI.
- Cap $RESULTS to fit GitHub's issue body limit, and link to the run. Fill
  issue tokens in one pass, so text inside the results stays literal.
- Remove the exit_on_fail default. Empty means false, with a notice that v2
  defaults it to true.

Closes #80

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Make v2 the major that matches CLI 5, and read the CLI's exit code.

- Default exit_on_fail to true and version to 5, and drop the v1 version guard.
- Move the decision into a pure decideOutcome({ exitCode, exitOnFail }): 0
  passes, 1 fails unless exit_on_fail is false, 2 always fails. Other codes
  fail too. Results load whenever the file exists, so the issue and PR steps
  still run on 1. A missing results file always fails the job.
- Warn when the CLI exits 0 with failed specs, which a config with
  exitOnFail: false or a CLI older than 5 can cause.
- Pass arguments as an array, so paths with spaces work.
- Declare the issue_url and pull_request_url outputs.
- Clear stale runCoverage and command text from the README.

BREAKING CHANGE: exit_on_fail defaults to true and version defaults to 5. The
ios input, the issueUrl output, and the runTests subcommand for CLI 2 are gone.

CLI 5 defaults --output-dir to the current directory, so .doc-detective/runs
dirtied the checkout and made create_pr_on_change open a PR on every run. Pass
--output-dir beside --output, in RUNNER_TEMP, which matches where CLI 4 puts
the run folder.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CLI 4 parses arguments strictly, so it rejects --output-dir as unknown, which
would break an explicit version: 4 on v2. Leave the flag out when version stays
below 5. Keep it for an empty version, tags, and anything that can resolve to 5.

Assert that the failing fixture fails the action step.

The fail-tests job cannot turn red from the dd step. continue-on-error: true ignores its failure, and no later step checks steps.dd.outcome. If the action exits 0 on doc-content-inline-tests-fail.md, the job still passes. The decideOutcome unit test does not cover this wiring, so the workflow is the only check of the failing path.

Add an assertion step after the dd step. steps.dd.outcome reflects the step result before continue-on-error is applied, so it reports failure for the expected failing run.

hawkeyexl and others added 6 commits November 7, 2026 04:17
Rename `integrations` to `issue_mentions` and `prompt` to `issue_prompt`,
so the Action no longer shares a name with config `integrations`. The old
names stay as deprecated aliases: the action reads the new name first,
falls back to the old one with a warning, and fails when both are set.

`issue_prompt` has no action.yml default, because the runner fills
defaults in before the action starts and that would hide a value set
under `prompt`. The action applies the default itself.

README now has a section for every input, and each default matches
action.yml (working_directory, pr_branch, pr_body, issue_body and its
$RESULTS, $RUN_URL and $PROMPT tokens). It says `config` and `input`
are relative to `working_directory`, uses `record`, drops the stray
`~~~~`, notes that exit_on_fail never turns exit 2 green, and uses
`doc-tests` job ids. It folds in the content of #59.

src/actionInputs.test.ts parses action.yml and README.md and fails when
an input lacks a section or a documented default drifts.

BREAKING CHANGE: the `integrations` and `prompt` inputs are renamed
`issue_mentions` and `issue_prompt`. The old names still work, log a
deprecation warning, and fail the job when set together with the new
name.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
scripts/check-doc-examples.mjs classifies each fenced json/yaml block in
README.md, and each artifacts/*.{json,yaml,yml} file, as a spec, test,
step, or config by shape, and validates it with doc-detective-common's
validate(). It skips blocks it can't classify and fences marked
`invalid`. `npm test` runs it after the unit tests, against
doc-detective-common@v5-rc as a devDependency.

Delete the four v2 headful configs in artifacts/. Nothing references
them.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The example check now fails any example that validate() accepts only by
upgrading it from v2, such as `"action": "goTo"` steps. With
addDefaults: false, validate() returns the caller's object unless it
transformed it, so a different object means a v2 form. Steps keyed by
`action` now classify as steps, so a standalone v2 step is checked too.
Deliberate counter-examples stay skippable with an `invalid` fence.

Red first: the stricter check failed on artifacts/change.spec.json.
Convert it to v3: `runShell` steps, `runOn` with the same platforms and
chrome, and `shell: cmd` on the Windows step, whose command is cmd
syntax.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`integrations` now means only the config key, so the collapsible section
that `issue_mentions` adds to the issue body is titled "AI issue
mentions", and the unknown-value warning names `issue_mentions`. README
and action.yml name the section.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The fail-tests assertion passed on any step failure, including exit 2
(nothing tested) or a crash with no results. It now also requires the
results output with summary.specs.fail above 0.

Code Review Complete

  • Gather context (CLAUDE.md, repo structure)
  • Read PR diff and changed source files
  • Analyze correctness, security, and test coverage
  • Submit GitHub PR review with findings

Review submitted. Summary of findings:

Important

  • src/index.ts:277–288 — createPullRequest calls exec() with template strings; @actions/exec splits on whitespace, so a pr_branch with spaces creates the wrong branch and the literal quotes in user.email/user.name args are wrong. Should use exec("git", [...]) two-arg form.
  • src/index.ts:29–57 — parseIntegrations and buildIntegrationsAccordion have no unit tests despite non-trivial logic (allowlist, copilot special-case, HTML accordion).

Nit

  • src/runCli.ts:73–79 — stdout and stderr interleave into one buffer; separate buffers would make crash messages cleaner.
  • version: "" behavior (linked CLI older than 5 → "unknown flag" error) is documented in the PR description but not in the README for that input.

No blocking issues. The new outcome, issueBody, cliVersion, and actionInputs modules are clean and well-tested.

Solid PR — the new modules are clean and well-tested. A few pre-existing correctness issues in createPullRequest are worth cleaning up while the file is open, and test coverage has one gap. No blocking issues.

Important

exec() string-interpolation in createPullRequest (src/index.ts:277–288)

@actions/exec's single-argument form splits the command string on whitespace to get program + args. That means:

  • A pr_branch with spaces (e.g. "my feature branch") silently creates the wrong branch instead of erroring.
  • The literal "…" quotes around userEmail / userName are passed as part of the argument value, not as shell quoting.

Replace the template-string calls with the two-argument form throughout:

await exec("git", ["config", "--global", "user.email", userEmail]);
await exec("git", ["config", "--global", "user.name", userName ?? ""]);
await exec("git", ["checkout", "-b", head]);
await exec("git", ["push", "origin", head]);

This is pre-existing code, but the PR modifies index.ts and the fix is small.

parseIntegrations / buildIntegrationsAccordion lack unit tests (src/index.ts:29–57)

Both functions have non-trivial logic (allowlist filtering with a warning, copilot special-casing, accordion HTML construction), but there are no tests for them. A bad issue_mentions value silently falls back to no mentions—that's the right behavior, but it should be verified. Consider extracting them to a module that can be tested (similar to how outcome.ts and issueBody.ts were extracted).

Nit

runCli captures both stdout and stderr into one string (src/runCli.ts:73–79)

CLI 5 logs to stderr (noted in a comment), so the error message on a crash surfaces stderr output—good. But stdout and stderr are concatenated into the same buffer, which loses ordering information and mixes the two streams. If the CLI ever writes structured output to stdout and diagnostics to stderr, interleaving could make crash messages harder to read. Using separate buffers and joining them with a header when needed would be clearer:

let stdoutOutput = "";
let stderrOutput = "";
const captureOut = (data: Buffer) => { stdoutOutput += data.toString(); };
const captureErr = (data: Buffer) => { stderrOutput += data.toString(); };

Not a blocker—the current approach works fine in practice.

cliVersion.ts comment says "An empty version, meaning the linked build, has it"

The function returns true for "" before any parsing, which is correct. But runCli.ts builds args with version ? \doc-detective@${version}` : "doc-detective", meaning an empty version skips the @specifier and relies on whatevernpxresolves. If a user has CLI 4 installed locally and passesversion: "", they'd get a "unknown flag --output-dir" error. The PR description documents this ("a linked CLI older than 5 fails with a usage error"), so this is an intentional known-limitation—just worth having in the README for the version: ""` case.

Already addressed from prior reviews

  • The issueBody.ts throw-on-no-room fix (CodeRabbit, resolved by hawkeyexl).
  • The check-doc-examples.mjs artifact parse-failure counting (1da90db).
  • The fail-tests assertion step in test.yml (e7d9771).

exec's single-string form splits on whitespace, so a pr_branch with a
space named the wrong branch. Also move the issue-mention helpers into
src/integrations.ts with unit tests.

Comment thread src/integrations.ts Resolved
A replacement string expands $& and $$, so a prompt containing them
reached the integration changed. Use a replacer function.

Review submitted. All issues from prior rounds are fixed. One nit: src/index.ts:221 uses .replace("$RUN_URL", runURL) (first-occurrence only, no callback) — inconsistent with the callback pattern used in buildIntegrationsAccordion and buildIssueBody, though harmless in practice since runURL can't contain $ special chars.

All issues from prior rounds are addressed. LGTM.

Fixed since last review

  • exec() two-argument form throughout createPullRequest — no more whitespace-splitting or literal quotes in args.
  • buildIntegrationsAccordion uses a replacement callback (() => prompt), so $&, $$, or $1 in the user's prompt are inserted literally. Test added.
  • parseIntegrations / buildIntegrationsAccordion unit tests in integrations.test.ts.
  • issueBody throws when the template leaves no room for results.
  • check-doc-examples.mjs counts artifact parse failures.
  • fail-tests job asserts the action step failed on the failing fixture.

Nit

src/index.ts:221 — pr_body uses .replace("$RUN_URL", runURL), which replaces only the first occurrence and doesn't use a callback. runURL can't contain $ today, so there's no real risk, but it's inconsistent with the callback pattern used in buildIntegrationsAccordion and buildIssueBody. Worth aligning:

const body = core.getInput("pr_body").replace(/\$RUN_URL/g, () => runURL);

New modules

outcome, issueBody, runCli, cliVersion, actionInputs, and integrations are clean, well-tested, and correctly export pure functions. The decideOutcome table, supportsOutputDir range parser, and buildIssueBody truncation logic all have solid unit coverage. No concerns.
