Summary

Ports the faustcsound opcodes from 6.x to the Csound 7 plugin API and wires them into the build, CI and release packaging.

Opcodes: faustgen, faustcompile, faustaudio, faustdsp, faustplay, faustctl.

Changes

  • 7.x/src/faustcsound/faustgen.cpp — ported to the Csound 7 API:
    • cs_float types with FAUSTFLOAT=cs_float
    • new 10-field OENTRY with the deinit field (replaces RegisterDeinitCallback)
    • csoundModuleInit registration via AppendOpcode
    • CreateThread (replaces removed CreateThread2)
    • runtime resolution of the Faust standard library next to the plugin
  • 7.x/src/faustcsound/CMakeLists.txt — build config supporting both a dynamic libfaust and a static libfaustwithllvm archive (-DFAUST_STATIC=ON) with symbol hiding (macOS -exported_symbols_list, Linux --exclude-libs,ALL), plus stdlib bundling and DEFAULT_FAUST_LIB_PATH.
  • 7.x/cmake/Modules/FindFAUST.cmake — FAUST_STATIC option, libfaustwithllvm discovery, stdfaust.lib/stdlib discovery, and platform system libraries (incl. tinfo on Linux, needed by the bundled LLVM).
  • 7.x/CMakeLists.txt — add the faustcsound subdirectory.
  • .github/workflows/plugins_build_7.yml — download the Faust 2.88.0 release binaries (cached) and build/stage the plugin and stdlib on Linux, macOS and Windows.

The stdlib is installed next to the plugin so import("stdfaust.lib") works without a separate Faust installation.

Notes / verification

  • Local macOS arm64 builds verified for both dynamic and static (FAUST_STATIC=ON) configurations; end-to-end tests pass.
  • Workflow validated with actionlint.
  • Linux static dependencies determined by inspecting undefined symbols in the release archive (setupterm → libtinfo, deflate → zlib, dlopen/pthread).
  • Unverified: Windows static link (no local MSVC) and Linux glibc compatibility of the release archive — may need CI iteration.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Faust support to Csound 7, including tools to compile Faust code, create DSP instances, process audio, and update controls.
    • Faust plugin packages now include the Faust standard library for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on using Faust opcodes, configuring Faust libraries, and differences in the Csound 7 port.

Port the faustcsound opcodes (faustgen, faustcompile, faustaudio,
faustdsp, faustplay, faustctl) from 6.x to the Csound 7 plugin API.

- Use cs_float/FAUSTFLOAT, the new OENTRY deinit field, and
  csoundModuleInit registration.
- Add a CMake build supporting both a dynamic libfaust and a static
libfaustwithllvm archive (-DFAUST_STATIC=ON) with symbol hiding.
- Install and auto-locate the Faust standard library so
import("stdfaust.lib") works without a separate Faust install.
- Add CI steps to download the Faust release binaries and build/stage
the plugin and stdlib on Linux, macOS and Windows.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds Faust opcode support to the Csound 7 build. It configures Faust discovery and plugin linking, implements compilation, DSP, audio, and control opcodes, and updates Linux, macOS, and Windows CI builds to package Faust libraries and standard-library files.

Changes: Faust plugin build and opcodes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and build the Faust plugin
7.x/CMakeLists.txt, 7.x/cmake/Modules/FindFAUST.cmake, 7.x/src/faustcsound/CMakeLists.txt, 7.x/src/faustcsound/faustcsound.exports, 7.x/src/faustcsound/README.md
CMake now discovers Faust libraries and the standard library, conditionally configures the plugin, and applies platform-specific linking and installation settings. The module export list adds four Csound module symbols. The README describes the opcodes and build settings.
Provision and package Faust across platforms
.github/workflows/plugins_build_7.yml
The workflow installs or restores Faust 2.88.0 on Linux, macOS, and Windows. It configures static Faust builds and packages plugin libraries and Faust standard-library files.
Compile Faust code and process audio
7.x/src/faustcsound/faustgen.cpp
The opcodes compile Faust code synchronously or asynchronously, manage factories and DSP instances, and initialize and process audio.
Register opcodes and update controls
7.x/src/faustcsound/faustgen.cpp
Module initialization sets the Faust library path and registers opcodes. faustctl validates control labels and clamps values to declared bounds.

The new Faust opcodes have several memory-safety and correctness problems. Control changes never take effect. Some error paths and multi-instance setups can free a DSP that is still in use or select the wrong one. Concurrent compilations can also run unsafely. These issues should be fixed before merging.

Store control labels without a newline.

For a control named vol, addctl stores vol\n, but getZone compares it with vol. Every normal faustctl lookup therefore fails. Terminate the copied label with '\0' instead. (csound.com)

Do not interpret the fifth numeric input as STRINGDAT.

The registered SSppo signature makes extra an optional numeric input. If a caller supplies a nonzero fifth input, this cast reads that number as a string-data pointer and passes an invalid string to Faust. Remove the unsupported input or register and read an actual string input. (csound.com)

Serialize Faust factory access across opcode instances.

p->lock belongs to one faustcompile instance. Two default-asynchronous compilations can therefore enter createDSPFactoryFromString concurrently; faustgen also calls it without this lock. Faust documents that factory access is not thread-safe by default. Use a shared lock for factory operations and protect the shared factory list, or enable Faust’s documented multithreaded factory mode and still synchronize list updates. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Release faustdsp controls on deinitialization.

init_faustdsp allocates controls and stores it in fobj->ctls. This path frees the record and engine but never deletes the controls. Repeated DSP instantiation therefore retains every controls list. Delete fobj->ctls before freeing the record.

Check the DSP registry head before looking up a handle. Deinitializing the last DSP leaves a possible null head in the existing ::dsp global. Both lookups dereference that head instead of reporting an invalid handle.

Do not delete the registered engine on a faustplay argument error.

p->engine is borrowed from a ::dsp record. If an input or output count is wrong, either error branch deletes that engine but leaves the record and other users pointing to it. Return InitError without deleting the borrowed engine.

Clear the final output channel at an early note end.

The loop omits output p->OUTOCOUNT - 1. On a partial final block, that channel retains samples after the valid region while the other channels are cleared. Iterate over all p->OUTOCOUNT outputs.

Assign a new handle without changing the previous handle.

fdsp->cnt++ assigns the preceding node’s old count to the new node and changes the preceding node’s count. With two faustgen instances, the second receives handle 0 and the first changes from 0 to 1. Later instances create duplicate counts, so handle lookups can select the wrong DSP. Assign fdsp->cnt + 1 without modifying fdsp.

Keep the declared output count within outs[MAXARG].

The signature advertises a handle plus 40 additional outputs, but faustgen::outs has only 40 slots. If Csound binds all 40 audio outputs, the final pointer writes into the following code field. Limit the signature to 39 audio outputs or enlarge the array.
