What this does

Adds offline specs for what must stay true after a cancellation, with no library change. They pass on main and guard behavior the cancellation and concurrency fixes rely on:

  • An Async stop during a provider request records exactly one :cancelled usage attempt, sends the request once, and leaves no assistant message.
  • A chat cancelled while streaming can ask again without keeping the partial reply.
  • An MCP stdio session and an MCP HTTP client stay usable after a cancelled call, and the cancelled call is not retried.
  • Three rounds of ten concurrent tool calls, in thread and fiber mode, leave no live workers and restore the caller's usage owner and progress listener.

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Breaking change
  • Documentation
  • Performance improvement

Specs only.

Scope check

  • I read the Contributing Guide
  • This aligns with RubyLLM's focus on LLM communication
  • This isn't application-specific logic that belongs in user code
  • This benefits most users, not just my specific use case

Related issue

None. These specs came out of the work on #1322, #1323, #1324, and #1325.

Quality check

  • I ran overcommit --install and all hooks pass
  • I tested my changes thoroughly
    • For provider changes: Re-recorded VCR cassettes with bundle exec rake vcr:record[provider_name]
    • All tests pass: bundle exec rspec --tag '~live' --tag '~generator' (6029 examples; the only 2 failures, in spec/ruby_llm/sandbox/mxc_spec.rb, fail the same way on main on macOS)
  • I updated documentation if needed (none needed: specs only)
  • I didn't modify auto-generated files manually (models.json, aliases.json)

Ownership

  • I understand every line of this change and can answer questions about it

API changes

  • Breaking change
  • New public methods/classes
  • Changed method signatures
  • No API changes

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added regression coverage for cancellation across provider requests, streaming chats, and MCP calls, including verifying that clients and chats can continue working afterward.
    • Added coverage for cancelled usage tracking and for preserving and restoring caller context during concurrent tool execution.

Exercise repeated tool workers, caller context restoration, and MCP
and chat reuse after cancellation. Check that an Async stop records
one cancelled usage attempt without retrying or saving a reply.

Keep these guards independent of the context and executor fixes.

Walkthrough

The PR adds regression specs for cancelled provider and MCP calls, reuse after cancellation, and thread- and fiber-mode tool worker lifecycle and context.

Changes: Async lifecycle coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cancellation accounting and reuse
spec/ruby_llm/accounting/usage_spec.rb, spec/ruby_llm/chat_loop_spec.rb, spec/ruby_llm/mcp/http_spec.rb, spec/ruby_llm/mcp_spec.rb
The specs check cancelled usage accounting and verify that chat and MCP calls can proceed after cancellation.
Tool worker lifecycle and context
spec/ruby_llm/chat/tool_concurrency_lifecycle_spec.rb
Thread- and fiber-mode specs check paired results, worker completion, observed usage and progress context, and restoration of caller context.

Priority: Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Other

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 1324: The fiber-mode lifecycle spec checks worker completion, but does not stop the outer Async task while workers run.
  • Issue 1322: The MCP cancellation specs check cancellation and subsequent calls, but do not test calls made from child fibers.

Suggested reviewers: crmne

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to eb204

The new fiber lifecycle spec will fail on JRuby, which the CI matrix covers. Add an MRI-only skip guard, as other async specs do, before merging. The PR adds no library changes, so production behavior is unaffected.
