Propagate cancellation checkpoints to child fibers - #1326
A tool that does its work in a child fiber or an Async task lost the chat's cancellation checkpoint, because Support::Cancellation kept it in fiber-local Thread.current[...]. MCP calls made from that child ignored chat.cancel and waited for the server or the timeout.
The checkpoint now lives in fiber storage, the way ProgressReporter keeps the progress listener and Accounting::Usage keeps the owner, so fibers and threads a tool starts inherit it. A child that a tool starts sees cancellation at its next MCP wait. The MCP listener thread clears the inherited checkpoint, as #1186 does for the usage owner, so a listener started inside a tool is not stopped by that chat's cancellation.
Cancellation is still cooperative, and nothing changes for code that does not start fibers or threads. The new examples cover:
Red before the fix: a child fiber and a waiting Async child stop when another thread cancels the chat through Chat#ask; checkpoints reach child fibers and Async tasks; a child sees a cancellation that happens after it started; sibling fibers keep their own overrides; a child keeps the checkpoint it inherited.
Guards: nested scopes restore after errors, Fiber.new(storage: nil) opts out, and the listener clears the checkpoint while keeping unrelated fiber storage.
How to reproduce
Run from the repository root with bundle exec ruby -Ilib repro.rb. Nothing goes over the network.
require'ruby_llm'require'async'require'timeout'RubyLLM.configure{ |config| config.openai_api_key='unused-offline'}server=File.expand_path('spec/fixtures/mcp/server.rb')files=Class.new(RubyLLM::MCP){command(RbConfig.ruby,server)}.newtool=Class.new(RubyLLM::Tool)dodescription'Calls an MCP tool from an Async child task'define_method(:name){'fan_out'}define_method(:execute){Sync{ |task| task.async{files.call('wait')}.wait}}endchat=RubyLLM.chat(model: 'gpt-4.1').with_tools(tool.new)call=RubyLLM::ToolCall.new(id: 'call_1',name: 'fan_out',arguments: {})reply=RubyLLM::Message.new(role: :assistant,content: '',tool_calls: {call.id=>call})chat.provider.define_singleton_method(:complete){ |*, **| reply}chat.before_tool_call{Thread.new{sleep0.3;chat.cancel}}beginTimeout.timeout(3){chat.ask('Wait for the server')}rescueRubyLLM::CancelledError,Timeout::Error=>eputse.classensurefiles.closeend
For provider changes: Re-recorded VCR cassettes with bundle exec rake vcr:record[provider_name]
All tests pass: bundle exec rspec --tag '~live' --tag '~generator' (6033 examples; the only 2 failures, in spec/ruby_llm/sandbox/mxc_spec.rb, fail the same way on main on macOS)
I updated documentation if needed (none needed: Support::Cancellation is internal and no public behavior is documented differently)
I didn't modify auto-generated files manually (models.json, aliases.json)

Bug Fixes
Cancellation now reliably interrupts operations running in child fibers and asynchronous tasks, including tools that are waiting or have not yet completed.
Background listeners are isolated from cancellation signals belonging to the operation that started them, while retaining other inherited context.
Tools that start child fibers lose the chat cancellation checkpoint.
Use inheritable fiber storage so their next check sees cancellation,
and clear that checkpoint when an independent MCP listener starts.
Cover child tasks, nested scopes, sibling isolation, and cancellation
through a chat tool without changing the public API.
Fixescrmne#1322
Cancellation checkpoints now use fiber-local storage so child fibers and async tasks can access them. The MCP listener runs with a nil cancellation watcher. New specs cover checkpoint behavior and cancellation in child execution.
The listener thread runs inside Cancellation.watch(nil). The spec checks inherited Fiber storage, local watcher behavior, and subscription cancellation.
Chat cancellation in child execution spec/ruby_llm/chat_cancellation_fibers_spec.rb
Specs cover cancellation while a tool runs a child fiber or waits for an async child. They check the cancellation error, child completion state, and chat cancellation state.
The JRuby test run can fail because the new async example lacks an engine guard. Add the guard before merging.

Explanation
Issue #1322 requires Chat#cancel to reach MCP work started in a tool child fiber or Async task. Support::Cancellation.watch and check now use inheritable Fiber[] storage. The new chat and cancellation specs verify propagation, cancellation after child start, and RubyLLM::CancelledError. MCP::Listener clears the inherited checkpoint with watch(nil), and its spec verifies that unrelated fiber storage remains. The implementation and tests satisfy the linked coding requirements.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #1322. The production changes update cancellation propagation and isolate MCP listener cancellation. The added tests cover the requested child-fiber, Async-task, and listener behavior. No unrelated production behavior or public API change is shown.
Full details: Review Evidence Stays Out Of The Repository
Explanation
The pull request adds only Ruby implementation files and RSpec test files. The changed-file inventory contains no screenshots, captures, recordings, comparison pages, HTML artifacts, or other review-evidence files. The added specs are project tests, not reviewer media.
Full details: Dependencies From Sources The Maintainer Controls
Explanation
The pull request changes only Ruby implementation and spec files. The authoritative diff contains no manifest, lockfile, or package-manager configuration changes, and it adds no git URL, fork, patch, override, replace entry, or alternate registry. The added require 'async' is test code and does not change dependency sourcing.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 5 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
