Give chats files the model reads on demand - #1238
Conversation
Attachments and long tool results travel with every request, so a PDF attached to the first question is sent again with every later one. with_files gives a chat a FileStore and five tools to list, read, search, write, and edit its files. Attachments are kept in the store and become one line naming the file after their own question, long tool results spill to files with a preview, and runs of code start with a copy of the files and save what they write back to them. Converters read text, HTML, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and, with pdf-reader, PDFs; an opt-in converter reads scans with RubyLLM.ocr. Persisted chats keep their files in Active Storage, in a new ruby_llm_chat_files table that the install generator and the 2.2 upgrade create, sharing blobs with message attachments. A store with an owner keeps one person's files apart in a shared chat.

preserve the path needed to reopen the file.
- Around line 70-79: Update FileReferences#spill to sanitize tool_call.name

CodeQL flagged the regular expressions that stripped tags from Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and HTML files: a file with many unclosed tags made them quadratic. The converters now walk each document once, and a < that opens no tag stays text.

chat.with_files(store:) becomes chat.with_file_store(store), positional like with_tools and with_schema, and nil removes it. chat.files becomes chat.file_store, and the agent macro becomes file_store. On a Rails record, file_store is now the attached store, so the owner moves onto with_file_store(owner:). RubyLLM.file_store builds the shipped stores (memory, directory) and, through converter, the built-in converters (ocr, pdf, office, html, text), so user code needs no class names. A copied configuration gets its own file_converters Hash, so registering a converter on a context leaves the global one alone.

With a store that keeps its files in a folder (FileStore#local_root, which FileStore::Directory answers), run_code runs in that folder: nothing is copied in or out, writes land in the store as they happen, and each file the run created or changed, found by comparing size and mtime, goes to after_file_write. Skills and mounts are linked into the folder read-only for the run and removed after. Other stores no longer copy every file into every run: the model names the files its code reads in run_code's new files argument, and a name with no file is an error it sees. spill_over becomes spill_to_file, on with_file_store, the agent macro, and the Tool macro. The sandbox CI job runs the renamed spec file.

The HTML, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF converters, with the ZIP and XML readers under them and the pdf-reader dependency, are gone. Core reads text files as they are and reads PDFs, scans, and photos with the OCR converter where an app registers it. Other formats take a converter of the app's own, which the guide shows, with a suggested gem name.
A long tool result the store cannot save goes to the model whole, and its file name keeps only safe characters, so a failed write never loses a result whose tool already ran. The line for an earlier read_file result names the path the model read. Attachment names lose leading dots, which a folder store refuses. A folder store writes through a hidden temporary file. search_files takes . and / for every file, as list_files does. The chat UI lists only the files without an owner.
Attachments and long tool results ride along with every request today. A 40-page PDF attached to the first question goes out again with every question after it, and a search tool that returns 30,000 characters stays in every request until the conversation ends. The model pays for all of it, and its attention spreads thin.
This attaches a file store to a chat. Nothing large stays in the conversation: it becomes a file, the model sees one line about it, and reads the part it needs with tools.
The method names the thing it attaches, like
with_toolsandwith_schema, andnilremoves it, likewith_schema(nil):What the model gets
Five tools:
list_files,read_file(by lines or by characters, with offset and limit),search_files(grep over the text of every file that can be read as text),write_file, andedit_file(one exact span, like an editor's replace). What changes in a conversation
Attachments become files. Every attachment is kept in the store. The model sees the files attached to the latest question in full, as today, and one line naming each of them from the next question on. Files other tools return become that line at once, and
read_fileshows a file in full until the next question. The messages themselves don't change, so UIs keep showing attachments, andwith_file_store(nil)sends everything again.Attachments the provider can't take (a
.docxon Anthropic, say) become that line too, so the model reads them as text instead of the request failing.Long tool results spill to files. A result over 10,000 characters is saved under
results/, and the model gets the first 2,000 characters and the path. JSON is saved pretty printed so it reads and greps by line.spill_to_file:changes the limit, and a tool can set its own withspill_to_file 50_000or opt out withspill_to_file false.Code execution works on the same files, in one of two modes that follow from the store, with no flag:
RubyLLM.file_store.directory, or any store whoselocal_rootreturns a folder):run_coderuns in that folder, like a coding agent. Nothing is copied in or out; the code reads the files in place and its writes land in the store as they happen. The run snapshots size and mtime before and after, so the tool result lists, andafter_file_writereceives, each file it created or changed. Skills and mounts are linked into the folder read-only for the run and removed after; where the folder has its own file at that path, the run sees that and the result says so. The sandbox can read and write the whole folder, so the guide says to give each store a folder of its own.filesargument torun_code(paths fromlist_files; a folder copies everything in it). A name with no file is an error the model sees. What the run writes or changes is saved back, and the result lists paths instead of carrying attachments.Without a file store, code execution behaves exactly as before.
Converters
read_fileandsearch_filesread through converters, cached per file version. Core ships only two: plain text, which reads text files as they are, and OCR, which reads PDFs, scans, and photos withRubyLLM.ocr(model-backed, so it handles real PDFs and tables) and runs only where an app registers it, since each file costs a request. No HTML, Office, or pdf-reader converters: half-built parsers don't belong in core. Without a converter,read_filehands images and PDFs to the model as files, and anything else can be read with code.RubyLLM.file_store.converterreturns the two, so registering one needs no class names, and apps register their own by MIME type:The factory has
ocr(**options)andtext. A converter is anything that answerscallwith an attachment; the guide's "Writing a Converter" section shows one and suggests shipping them asruby_llm-converters-<name>gems, matching theruby_llm-providers-<name>convention (andruby_llm-file_stores-<name>for stores). Converters stay global inconfig.file_converters; a context's copy of the config gets its own Hash, so registering one there leaves the global config alone.Stores
RubyLLM.file_store.memory(the default) andRubyLLM.file_store.directory(path)build the two stores I ship:FileStore::Memory, andFileStore::Directory, which keeps files in a folder, never follows symlinks, and refuses paths that leave it. A store of your own subclassesRubyLLM::FileStoreand implements five methods (list, find, read, write, delete). In Rails,
acts_as_chatrecords keep their files in Active Storage, in a newruby_llm_chat_filestable, so they live on whatever service the app uses. An attachment already in Active Storage shares its blob with the chat's file instead of being copied. The row keeps the converted text, which apps canencrypts.chat.with_file_storewith no store uses it, andchat.with_file_store(owner: user)gives a store that writes files for one person and sees theirs plus the shared ones, for chats several people share. On a record,file_storeis the attached store, as on a plain chat, so the owner moved ontowith_file_storerather than a builder with the same name. The install generator and the 2.2 upgrade migration both create the table, and the chat UI generator lists a chat's files.API
A store of your own that keeps files in a folder opts into workspace mode by defining
local_root. Public classes for custom stores and converters:RubyLLM::FileStore,FileStore::Memory,FileStore::Directory,FileStore::Converters::OCR,RubyLLM::StoredFile,RubyLLM::FileNotFoundError, and in RailsRubyLLM::ActiveRecord::FileStoreandRubyLLM::ActiveRecord::ChatFile. The model's tools keep their names:list_files,read_file,search_files,write_file,edit_file.Not in this PR
Quotas, retention, and encryption of the blobs stay with the application. So do long-running sandbox processes: they need a way to detach a run from the job that started it, which is its own change.

Copying the whole store into every code run costs a download per file per run with Active Storage.Settled: a store with a folder runs code in place, and other stores copy in only the files the model names infiles.Tests
Unit specs for the stores (one shared contract run against Memory, Directory, and Active Storage), converters, each tool, the request view, spilling to files, code execution in both modes with a fake sandbox and with a real sandbox (in place in a folder, read-only mounts linked in, and copying named files), agents, and the Rails store with owners and shared blobs, and the store and converter factories. The generator specs cover the install and upgrade migrations and the chat UI's files list. Two cassettes record real flows: Claude and GPT finding one line in a 400-line file. (The Word-file recording went with the Office converter.)
Mutation testing kills every mutant it can place. Most mutants in the new folders get no verdict, because mutineer writes them beside the source, and Zeitwerk finds them when it first loads a namespace that nothing loaded before, the same way
mcp/andtransport/do in the full run. One equivalent mutant is in.mutineer.yml.Summary by CodeRabbit
