What

Each pull request commit's message is piped to the CLI (commit-check --message with stdin), and the CLI never learned that commit's author:

  • ignore_authors compared the runner's user.name, or, with none set, the author of HEAD (GitHub's merge commit). Each commit's own author was never compared.
  • An author-based rule had nothing to read. commit-check#661 adds CC017, which rejects a commit whose author is an AI tool.

Now each commit's raw message is still piped in, exactly as before, and its own author goes with it as GIT_AUTHOR_NAME / GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL. That is where the CLI reads the author of a piped message (commit-check#661).

  • Commit the clone holds: author read with git show -s --format=%an%x1f%ae <sha>.
  • Commit listed only by the API (default shallow actions/checkout, or no checkout step): the author the API recorded.

The message itself is read the same way as before. --rev was considered and dropped, because the CLI rebuilds a revision's message from git's subject, and git's subject joins every line up to the first blank line, which could change subject-length verdicts.

Before / after

PR commit, ai_attribution = "forbid", ignore_authors = ["Renovate Bot"] Before After (with commit-check#661)
authored by google-labs-jules[bot] CLI sees no author → pass CC017 fails
authored by Renovate Bot compared runner / HEAD identity → checked skipped, as configured
authored by Jane Dev pass pass

Checked end to end against the commit-check#661 branch, piping Fix parser crash + Co-authored-by: Jane Dev with each author in GIT_AUTHOR_*: Renovate Bot skip, Jane Dev pass, Jules fails ai_author.

The pinned CLI (2.19.5) ignores these variables, so this PR changes no verdict until the pin moves to a release that contains commit-check#661.

Checks

pytest main_test.py: 243 passed, coverage of main.py 100%. ruff check, ruff format and mypy are clean. The one local failure, the version-pin test, comes from a dev build of the CLI reporting 0.0.0; CI installs the pinned release. New tests cover the author env for local and API commits, a blank author field, no author, and _local_author against a real commit.

Each PR commit's message was piped to the CLI, so the CLI never saw the
commit's author: ignore_authors compared the runner's git identity or the
merge commit's author, and an author-based rule had nothing to read.

A commit the clone holds is now checked by its hash (--message --rev),
so the CLI reads that commit's message and its own author. A commit
listed only by the API (the default shallow checkout, or no checkout at
all) is still piped in, with the author the API recorded passed as
GIT_AUTHOR_NAME / GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL, which is where the CLI reads the
author of a message that has no commit.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The change records author names and emails from the commit API. PR commit checks use a local revision when available; otherwise, they pass the commit message through stdin and use recorded author details when available.

Changes: Commit message checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture API commit authors
main.py, main_test.py
get_messages_from_api records each listed commit’s author name and email by SHA when an author is present. Tests cover recorded and missing authors.
Route commit checks
main.py, main_test.py
run_check_json and check_scope accept an optional environment overlay. PR message checks use --rev for locally resolved commits. For other commits, they pass the message through stdin and supply recorded author variables when available. Tests cover both routes.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: Low · up to 48ea8

Locally available commits with consecutive message lines can now fail the subject-length check despite a short first line. Merge risk is bounded to this formatting case; preserving raw messages would remove it.

Pre-merge checks: Passed 5

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 80.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 2 files.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat: check each pull request commit with its own author" matches the main change. The PR checks each PR commit separately. Commits present in the clone are checked by revision, so the CLI reads each commit's own message and author. Commits listed only by the API are piped, and the API-recorded author is passed through GIT_AUTHOR_NAME and GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL. The title names the feature and the author handling. It omits the local-versus-API routing, but that detail is secondary. The title is specific, concise, and follows conventional commit style.

Test the local commit’s author with the real CLI.

The routing test mocks the CLI, so it cannot detect a regression that checks HEAD’s author instead. Create two local commits with different authors and configure ignore_authors for only the first. Call run_pr_message_checks for both and assert that the first scope has checks and is skipped, while the HEAD scope passes.
