docs(mosaic): make agents compare ports with the legacy component before and after building - #10656
When an agent builds a Mosaic version of a component that already exists in @clerk/react or @clerk/ui, it often doesn't look at the old one. So it changes how things behave without noticing, and the PR doesn't mention it.
We audited #10588 (headless sign-in, sign-up, sign-out and MetaMask buttons) against the old @clerk/react buttons. These things changed, and the PR didn't mention them:
A failed sign-out shows nothing. The old button at least left an error in the console.
After a failed sign-out, the button turns into its loading placeholder and stays that way.clerk.signOut clears its state before the request and doesn't put it back when the request fails.
Your onClick now runs after the action starts. Before, it ran first, and throwing in it stopped the action.
appearance was dropped from the modal mode.
The sign-out redirect default changed from / to the after-sign-out URL.
The tests mocked Clerk's methods instead of using the fake Frontend API, so they couldn't catch the placeholder bug.
The docs already say what to do: treat the old component as the spec and run the parity audit (docs/migration.md, docs/parity-audit.md). The agent treated the port as a brand-new feature, so it did neither. #10632 fixed the docs and examples agents copy, but nothing makes them do this comparison.
What this changes
A port now leaves a short notes file, tmp/mosaic-parity/<feature>.md. It's in tmp/, so it's never committed. Two hooks check it:
List the old behavior before you build. The agent can't create a new feature's model file until the notes file names the old component and lists what it does. For example, features/sign-out-button/ needs notes on packages/react/src/components/SignOutButton.tsx.
Compare before you finish. The agent can't finish until the notes file has a parity audit: every old behavior marked as kept, changed on purpose, or deferred. It gives up after three tries, so it can't get stuck.
Work outside Mosaic isn't affected:
The "before you build" check only starts for files under packages/mosaic/src/features/.
The "before you finish" check asks git whether the branch adds a Mosaic feature. If it doesn't, the agent finishes as usual. This is how the existing lint hooks limit themselves to Mosaic and Swingset.
Both checks only apply to features that are new on the branch and have an old component with the same name. Edits to existing features, and features with no old counterpart, go through.
The docs say the same thing:
AGENTS.md says a port is a migration, and explains the notes file.
migration.md and parity-audit.md include packages/react in the text and in the search command.
The audit now has to list any difference that breaks a Mosaic rule. Those get fixed or raised with the user, not labeled "deliberate."
How we checked it
Every run used the same prompt: "Add a headless SignOutButton to @clerk/mosaic…, with a feature test." The prompt mentions no docs. Two runs on #10632 as it was, and two with this PR.
In both runs with this PR, the agent tried to finish before its audit came back, and the finish check sent it back to record it. Its own audit then caught the onClick order change. The hooks make sure the comparison happens, but fixing what it finds is still up to the agent and the reviewer.
The hook script has unit tests, and we also ran it by hand against new and existing features, missing and half-filled notes files, and bad input.
What this doesn't cover
The placeholder bug. It comes from inside clerk.signOut, and no doc describes it, so no comparison will find it. Only a test where sign-out fails will.
Ports with a different name from their old component aren't caught by the hooks. The AGENTS.md rule still covers them.
Small sample: two runs on each side, one model.
Also found while testing
The repo's existing lint hooks, which check a session before it finishes, have two problems. I'll fix them in a separate PR:
They loop forever when a lint error can't be fixed.
…y audit for ports
Ports of @clerk/react and @clerk/ui components are migrations. A PreToolUse
hook blocks writing a new feature model until its legacy namesake has been
read, and a Stop hook blocks finishing once until the parity audit subagent
has run. AGENTS.md, migration.md and parity-audit.md say the same for agents
that don't run Claude hooks.
The change updates Mosaic migration guidance to search both React and UI components and to record inventories and parity audits in an ignored temporary file. It adds a CLI gate and configures Claude Code and Codex hooks for pre-write and stop checks. The gate checks inventory details when a new feature model is written and checks for a parity audit when a new feature has a legacy counterpart. Stop checks stop blocking after three blocks. Tests cover file discovery and proof-section validation.
The migration guard can silently miss or accept incomplete parity evidence, and its Claude wiring is not covered by tests; these gaps should be addressed before merge.

Scope the parity-audit check to each changed feature.
Line 26 accepts any Agent call whose input matches /parity/i, anywhere in the transcript. That single match clears the block for every feature in migrations. A feature changed after the audit, or never covered by it, passes the gate. The check also ignores timing, so an audit that runs before a feature changes still counts for that feature.
The documented audit covers one migration per run. Its prompt takes one legacy file list and one new file list (packages/mosaic/docs/parity-audit.md). The gate should match each feature's legacy counterpart to an audit call that names it, and require that audit to run after that feature's last change. A match on the word "parity" alone also accepts unrelated Agent calls.

Fixed in 7317272. Each ported feature now needs a parity audit whose prompt names its legacy file or its feature folder. Auditing one feature no longer covers another.

@austincalvelage The feature-specific check is now in place. Line 31 requires the audit input to name the legacy file or feature folder.
The timing issue remains. Lines 26–31 accept a matching audit anywhere in the transcript, including before the feature’s latest edit. Please retain each feature’s last edit position and require a matching audit after that position.
In a real Claude Code session, the new sign-out-button model write is now refused until the notes file names SignOutButton.tsx and lists an inventory, then it goes through. Before, it was created straight away.

Document the stop-hook retry limit.
The parity gate stops blocking after three stop attempts. An agent can therefore finish without a ## Parity audit section. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Line 50 says the hook blocks finishing until the audit exists. State the retry limit and keep the manual requirement, or remove the escape from the gate.

inventoryProblem accepts ## Inventory followed by TODO, and auditProblem accepts a header-only audit. This is a narrow enforcement gap because the migration requires every inventory row to receive an audit classification. It is not a major defect: the hook is documented as a best-effort existence backstop. Reject obvious placeholders and header-only audits if stronger protection is required, but do not expand this hook into a full row-matching validator.
