CAS downloader tokens can now be scoped to a single artifact digest. A scoped token can read only that digest, so a download URL handed to a less trusted environment cannot be used to read other artifacts in the same CAS backend.

  • Add an optional digest claim to CAS downloader tokens. Tokens without the claim keep the current behavior.
  • The CAS enforces the claim in the HTTP download handler, the bytestream read path and ResourceService.Describe. Describe now also requires the downloader role.
  • CASCredentialsService.Get and CASRedirectService.GetDownloadURL accept a new scope_to_digest field to mint a scoped token.
  • The /download/<digest> redirect, chainloop artifact download and the control plane CAS client now request scoped tokens.

Inline backends have no download URL, so they are not affected.

Refs SEC-634

AI disclosure: this change was produced with assistance from Claude Code.

Add an optional digest claim to CAS downloader tokens. The CAS enforces
it in the HTTP download handler, the bytestream read path and
ResourceService.Describe, which now also requires the downloader role.
Tokens without the claim keep the current behavior.

CASCredentialsService.Get and CASRedirectService.GetDownloadURL accept
scope_to_digest to mint a scoped token. The /download redirect, the CLI
artifact download and the control plane CAS client now ask for one.

P2 app/artifact-cas/internal/service/bytestream.go ▶

Bytes may reach the canonical digest key only if the server-computed SHA-256 of the uploaded content equals the client-declared digest, and that verification must happen before backend upload.

P2 app/controlplane/internal/service/cascredential.go ▶

When rbacEnabled applies, a CAS download is allowed only for artifacts mapped to projects where the caller has a project membership, or for public artifacts; only admins/owners may fall back to the org default backend without a project-scoped mapping.

P2 app/controlplane/internal/service/casredirect.go ▶

External login callbacks must not carry reusable bearer session tokens; any callback artifact must be short-lived, single-use, and bound to the initiating client and callback before a session JWT is minted.

P2 app/controlplane/pkg/biz/casclient.go ▶

WorkflowRunService.View may inline policy-evaluation bundles only when both the reported size and the actual downloaded size stay within the configured cap; otherwise it must leave evaluations out of the response and return only a CAS reference.

P2 app/controlplane/pkg/biz/cascredentials.go ▶

ByteStream uploads must be rejected before buffering more than the backend's configured MaxBytes for the token, rather than accepting unbounded data into memory.

Past fixes (9)

P2 59d1818 · CWE-345

The commit fixes a genuine artifact-cas integrity bug: gRPC downloads are now fully verified against the requested digest before any bytes are streamed to the client.
1 file

P2 26a6cec · CWE-354

Artifact-CAS previously wrote unverified object-store uploads under the caller-declared digest; this commit stages and hashes uploads first, rejecting mismatches before backend storage.
1 file

P2 6a32501 · CWE-400

Fixes an authenticated resource-exhaustion vulnerability where artifact-cas buffered full Azure/S3/S3 Access Point uploads in memory before uploading them, allowing uploader clients to consume excessive RAM and degrade or deny service.
1 file

P2 86523ca · CWE-863 · PARTIAL FIX

Partial fix for cross-project CAS download authorization bypass by project-scoped API tokens in `CASCredentialsService/Get`.
1 file · Only part of the flaw was repaired here — the rest was never fixed. Sink: s.casMappingUC.FindCASMappingForDownloadByOrg, s.casUC.GenerateTemporaryCredentials.

P2 16e1849 · CWE-863

Fixes a project-RBAC bypass that let org members download private CAS artifacts from unauthorized projects within their organization.
1 file

P2 e1f3ea0 · CWE-770

Authenticated CAS uploads previously bypassed configured backend max-size limits and could exhaust artifact-cas memory.
3 files

P2 baa3b7e · CWE-598

The commit fixes a real CWE-598 information disclosure: browser download logins still exposed user session JWTs in `?t=` URLs and reused them as bearer auth until this patch switched that flow to a verifier-bound handoff.
1 file

P2 e2dde78 · CWE-863

E2dde78e fixes a real access-control bug where CAS redirect lookups treated project-scoped API tokens as org-wide and returned signed download URLs for artifacts outside the token's project.
1 file

P2 0a3859a · CWE-789

WorkflowRunService.View previously inlined arbitrary-size CAS-backed policy-evaluation bundles, enabling authenticated memory exhaustion; the commit caps downloads and returns a reference for large bundles.

How to check:
1. For each file above, confirm the listed guards are still reached on every path this
change adds or modifies. A guard on the direct path but skipped on a sibling path is
a live bug, not a style issue.
2. Where a file names a removed construct instead of a guard, search for that construct:
past fixes here deleted it rather than guarding it, so any surviving use is a lead.
3. Where an invariant is enforced at other entry points, check that this change does not
   add one that skips it.
4. Verify before reporting. Trace attacker-controlled input to the sink, confirm the
guard is genuinely absent, and state a concrete exploit. Discard what you cannot
   exploit.
5. Do not stop at these files. The fix history shows where risk concentrates, not the
   only bugs that exist.
6. When the review is complete, post a comment on this pull request to acknowledge it.
State that you reviewed the change against the security context. If you found no
issues, say so. If you found issues, do not put exploit details in the comment.
Report them to the user who asked for the review.
