Second consecutive metrics blackout: collector never produced a row (up-to-date path never converges it) #118
Description
Retro report: window 2026-10-17 → 2026-10-19
Window covered
- Window: 2026-10-17T21:08:39Z → 2026-10-19T21:31:27Z (2 days).
- Data source: boucle/metrics. Fetched: yes. Metrics rows in window: 0. Metrics rows on branch: 0. Last metrics row: never.
- Closed issues in window: 1 (Landing page boucle.dev — afro-futuriste, Boucle d'or, 'construire un produit est un jeu d'enfant' #1 — the previous retro report itself, "Retro window 2026-08-18→2026-10-17: empty metrics, 16 consumer fixes, healthy lesson stream").
- metrics_coverage: 0/1.
Counts
- Per-issue rows: none (metrics blackout).
- Window aggregates: empty (
{}). - Upstream proposals open at window close: 4 (#163, #159, #158, #155).
- Recent lesson titles: chore(deps): bump smol-toml from 1.8.0 to 1.9.1 #114–chore(deps): bump astro from 7.2.1 to 7.3.3 #123 (10 lessons, healthy stream).
Findings
F1 — Metrics blackout is now chronic, not transient (family: failures/limits)
The digest carries the verbatim warning: "WARNING: metrics blackout — 0 metrics rows for 1 closed issue(s) in window; the retro evidence layer is missing (collector unwired, or its rows dropped before the window query)."
This is the second consecutive blind window: the previous retro report (#1, covering 2026-08-18→2026-10-17) was itself titled "empty metrics". "Last metrics row: never" means the collector has NEVER produced a row on this branch — this is not a collector that stopped at some date, it is a collector that was never wired or whose rows never landed where the retro query reads. Two consecutive windows with zero evidence rows means the retro loop has been running on titles and lesson streams alone for two months.
Class: a documented switch nobody wired (lesson #117 in this window's own stream is literally titled "A documented switch nobody wired is worse than no switch" — the loop diagnosed its own disease in a lesson while the disease persisted in the metrics layer).
F2 — The blackout is upstream-shaped: proposal #163 matches (family: failures → upstream)
Open upstream proposal #163 ("bin/update: the up-to-date path must converge consumers (self-heal on every run, not only on version change)") describes exactly the mechanism that keeps a consumer blind: a consumer that is already at the latest version never re-runs the wiring/sync path, so a collector that was never wired stays never-wired forever. This window is the second consecutive data point for #163: the consumer updated to a version that documents the collector, the up-to-date path skipped convergence, and the window closed with 0 rows again. Enriched #163 with this evidence.
F3 — What the blackout cost this window (family: need vs delivered)
With 0 rows, the retro cannot see: terminal outcomes, verdicts, escalations, iterations, tokens, cost, or gaps for the closed issue. The one closed issue in the window is the previous retro report itself — so the only deliverable this window can verify is the retro layer, and the retro layer's own evidence feed is the thing that is broken. The lesson stream (#114–#123) shows real engine work happened in the period, which confirms activity exists but is invisible to metrics: the loop is producing lessons about its failures while its measurement of those failures reads as zero. Lesson #123 in this window ("A measurement that omits what it could not measure reads as a measurement of zero") is the exact failure mode: this digest's empty aggregates must never be read as "no activity", and the fix is to make the collector converge, not to re-interpret zeros.
Upstream posts made
- Enriched #163 (bin/update convergence) with the second-consecutive-blind-window evidence.
Anonymisation note
All consumer identifiers in the source digest were already replaced by retro_scrub ([consumer], [host], [user], [email], boucle/N-). This report uses only those generics and upstream issue numbers. No project name, host, username, path, e-mail or IID is reproduced.
