Release Notes

microsoft/monaco-editor (monaco-editor)

v0.56.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • Reorganizes the exported ESM modules to provide supported, tree-shakeable entry points (#5155). The monaco-editor entry point continues to load all features and languages. Custom bundles can now import monaco-editor/editor and opt into:
    • all editor features with monaco-editor/features/register.all, or individual features with monaco-editor/features/<feature>/register;
    • all language definitions with monaco-editor/languages/definitions/register.all, or individual definitions with monaco-editor/languages/definitions/<language>/register;
    • the CSS, HTML, JSON, and TypeScript language features with monaco-editor/languages/features/register.all, or their individual register entry points.
  • Renames the misspelled IOverlayWidgetPosition.stackOridinal property to stackOrdinal.
  • Removes the deprecated IMirrorModel and IWorkerContext worker API types.
New Features and APIs
  • Adds editor.doubleClickSelectsBlock.
  • Adds editor.find.closeOnResult and editor.inlayHints.showLongLineWarning.
  • Adds offWhenInlineCompletions to QuickSuggestionsValue.
  • Adds model and provider option support to inline completion providers.
  • Adds ICodeEditor.revealAllCursors, ICodeEditor.getWidthOfLine, and ICodeEditor.renderAsync.
  • Adds advanced-external and advanced-wasm diff algorithms.
  • Exposes typed native LSP client and transport APIs.
Fixes
  • Treats Markdown returned by language servers as untrusted (#5280).
  • Updates the editor core to the version used by 0.56.0-dev-20260625.

monaco-editor 0.56.0 adds a package.json "exports" map that rewrites
`monaco-editor/<path>` to `esm/vs/<path>`, so the previous deep
`monaco-editor/esm/vs/...` imports no longer resolve, and the basic
SQL grammar moved from `basic-languages/sql/sql.contribution` to
`languages/definitions/sql/register`.

Update the three import paths accordingly. The new SQL register entry
ships its own .d.ts, so the ambient module declaration in monaco.d.ts
is no longer needed.

monaco-editor 0.56.0 has been on npm since 2026-07-20, so it clears the 7-day soak window, but the PR as opened by Renovate failed the Web job:

Error: Failed to resolve import "monaco-editor/esm/vs/editor/editor.api.js" from "src/monacoThemes.ts"

Cause. 0.56.0 adds a package.json exports map ("./*.js": "./esm/vs/*.js"), so monaco-editor/<path> now resolves to esm/vs/<path> and the previous deep monaco-editor/esm/vs/... imports double the prefix. The basic SQL grammar also moved from basic-languages/sql/sql.contribution to languages/definitions/sql/register (see the 0.56.0 changelog, microsoft/monaco-editor#5155).

Fix (7a97b2a). Import-path changes only:

  • monaco-editor/esm/vs/editor/editor.api.js → monaco-editor/editor/editor.api.js (source, and the vi.mock path in monacoThemes.test.ts)
  • monaco-editor/esm/vs/basic-languages/sql/sql.contribution.js → monaco-editor/languages/definitions/sql/register.js
  • monaco-editor/esm/vs/editor/editor.worker?worker → monaco-editor/editor/editor.worker.js?worker
  • Deleted web/src/monaco.d.ts: the new SQL register entry ships its own .d.ts.

The bundle still imports only the core editor API + SQL grammar + base worker (no editor.main), so the 8 MiB embedded-asset budget and the no-CDN test still hold.

Verification. Locally: npm run lint, npm test -- --run (28 files / 267 tests), npm run build, and CGO_ENABLED=1 go test ./... all pass. CI: Web and Go jobs green on the pushed commit. Not verified in a browser, so SQL highlighting deserves a quick glance after merge.
