🎯 Changes

Functional callbacks now see the same reserved row metadata in live queries, Effects and inline includes. A projected $key: 'spoof' can no longer change a functional predicate because of query placement.

The maintainer extended the callback-input contract to fn.select(), fn.where() and fn.having(). Direct source rows and structured whole-source spreads expose genuine $key, $origin, $hasPendingWrites and $collectionId. Projections that create their own row shape expose none of those reserved fields to downstream source-input callbacks. Inline include values retain their authored selected shape, including when a predicate runs without a selection.

The compiler carries a normalized callback view beside each authored row occurrence. FROM, joined-source and union adapters preserve that view. Callbacks receive it after private-state removal. Final output also removes private state. This keeps callback filtering independent of the authored inline value and preserves genuine source metadata.

The compilation cache retains separate authored and normalized results in two slots. Reusing the same QueryIR on one graph preserves callback input and authored output across compilation orders. The compiler oracle checks raw output against separate-cache execution, without assigning an unsupported metadata policy to Effect roots.

Separate compilations also exposed an ordered-loading defect. Registering the later top-K replaced the earlier window's loading plan, so widening that earlier window could leave rows missing. Registration now combines the live requirements of every window on that source. Each top-K keeps its own window and setter. Nested ordered queries also retain every joined dependency. Public Collection and Effect results wait for all those sources, including while an acquisition remains pending.

The replay oracle keeps failure verdicts per subscription. A sibling acquisition cannot clear another subscription’s failure. The release workflow exposed another failure on both main and this branch. An include with no demand at truncate could fail while its sibling replay still loaded. The guard retains that failure during every pending replacement. First include demand now joins the shared replay before adapter callbacks run. Its own hold survives sibling settlement.

Solid query bindings also keep source row reads separate from query parameters. Initial compilation can synchronously read native stores. Those reads no longer recreate the binding when only source data changes. Application signals read while constructing callback and config queries remain reactive.

Current integration and compressed size at e9864bc

This head includes main 035a5260ef994ce3aabed77a3f09b35c71482a9a through a normal merge. The shared acquisition refactor removes duplicate construction, callbacks and failure arrays. It preserves replay ordering, ownership and publication behavior. The oracles, history grammars, comparisons, reach minima and run budgets remain unchanged.

One final-source run passes 1,787 tests across 11 files on each branch. These exercise replay, deferred acquisition, lifecycle ownership, publication, adapter ownership and current-main indexing. Focused TypeScript, ESLint, formatting, whitespace and pnpm lint:changed pass. ESLint reports zero errors and zero warnings. Each branch uses one worker. Local cached Vitest is 3.2.4, while CI uses 4.1.12.

Against exact main 035a5260, package gzip decreases by 59 B and package Brotli decreases by 38 B. Typical app gzip decreases by 75 B. Every measured app gzip scenario shrinks. Typical app Brotli increases by 26 B, and some other Brotli scenarios grow. The command is pnpm_config_verify_deps_before_run=false pnpm size:compare --base 035a5260ef994ce3aabed77a3f09b35c71482a9a --exact-base --packages db --files. These local results require a separate remote size check.

The versioned size record binds the source, tests and limits. Earlier evidence sections retain their historical commit bindings. This refactor changes only packages/db/src/collection/subscription.ts and evidence. Existing browser and Solid receiving results retain their historical source bindings. Full pnpm test, full repository builds and dependency installation did not run. Current-head CI is pending. CodeRabbit remains paused and supplies no fresh review of this refactor.

🔬 Oracle evidence

The coverage map and versioned nine-item audit retain the law, source hashes, failure traces, calibrations and limits. All nine findings have fixes. The record preserves historical gaps in the original pre-edit receiving inventory.

  • Law: The October 28 O12 decision governs selection inputs. The October 30 maintainer decision extends it to functional predicates while preserving authored inline output. Optional-cache transparency and ordered-window completeness remain independent guarantees.
  • Reach: The metadata owner executes 4,290 receiving histories across five callback forms, seven source paths and four receivers. It reaches all 22,502 callback, inline/rejection and compiler states. Real Effects check both event channels, every value and previousValue, continuity, exit/reentry and disposal silence. Another 144 ordered histories reach all 432 initial, moved and returned states. A further 128 joined-dependency histories reach 256 held and settled states across Collection and Effect receivers.
  • RED: Before callback production edits, the extended metadata owner rejects 1,102 comparisons among 4,923 tests. The new Effect receiver also rejects 203 comparisons on the actual PR base. Before the ordered fix, its extended owner rejects 48 histories among 424 tests. The original 280 ordered tests pass. The later joined-dependency extension rejects 24 comparisons before its production fix. Setup and recorder errors remain separate from these comparison failures.
  • GREEN: Before the replay fix, the integrated size refactor passed 6,533 tests across 16 files. These include 4,923 metadata-owner tests and 552 ordered-owner tests. Focused TypeScript, ESLint, formatting, whitespace and pnpm lint:changed pass. Earlier CI checked the unchanged documentation examples. This branch includes merged fix(db): classify Effect deltas from result membership #2301.
  • Mutant: Final source-bound checks reject a WHERE-only fix in 551 comparisons and normalization of every predicate pipeline in 696 authored-output comparisons. Losing the cache mode fails 26 comparisons. Restoring ordered-plan overwrite fails 48 comparisons. Joined-dependency overwrite, last-only and first-only controls fail 24, eight and eight comparisons. Earlier FROM/JOIN/union mode omissions each fail 112 compiler comparisons. These failures reach the intended judgments.
  • Limits: The finite metadata grammar bounds recursion at two QueryRefs, joins at one LEFT join, and mutation at one held successful update. The compiler-cache receiver checks initial graph drain. Union optimization can clone branch IR, so that path establishes propagation and transparency without demonstrating an original-key cache hit. The original ordered receiver checks a controlled compiler/loader boundary. The joined-dependency extension checks real core receivers with controlled acquisition timing, one inserted head row and at most two joined dependencies. Public window-promise integration retains its existing neighboring coverage. Grouped selected-context attribution differs from local source-input metadata. Static metadata and P11/P12 literal/type gaps remain open. Arbitrary descriptors, deeper recursion, overlapping writes, other joins, truncate, construction-failure cleanup and provider/framework timing need separate evidence.

Run both primary owners from the repository root:

TANSTACK_DB_ORACLE_STATISTICS=1 pnpm_config_verify_deps_before_run=false \
pnpm --dir packages/db exec vitest run --maxWorkers=2 \
  --coverage.enabled=false --typecheck.enabled=false \
  tests/query/virtual-row-fields-input-oracle.test.ts \
  tests/query/ordered-work-oracle.property.test.ts

The joined-dependency audit records the later fix and its three hostile controls. The replay-account audit records the separate test fix.

The loading-sibling replay record binds the later guard fix separately. The extended primary fails on unchanged branch production before the guard change. The finite grammar then passes 48 histories with failure, retirement, and own-recovery reach of 44, 33, and 12. The full replay owner passes all 45 tests. The old guard fails the intended retention comparison. The record preserves the historical recovery-reach gate limitation. PR #2318 carries the same fix to main and constructs the SQLite final catch-up boundary. Its two 80-history campaigns and two existing final-delivery replays pass.

📦 Shipped size

Shared FROM/JOIN compilation and input wrapping remove duplicate implementations. Container copying, include replacement, projection and ordering also share smaller paths. The refactor preserves the accepted behavior, oracle grammars and run budgets. It also removes a redundant NaN branch after Object.is and an unnecessary guard before object spread.

pnpm size:compare --packages db --files measures production bundles. The repository has no size:check script. Against merge-base a2f346596, the full package drops from 109,658 B to 109,595 B gzip. The typical app drops from 96,591 B to 96,527 B. Package Brotli drops by 47 B. Typical app Brotli grows by 21 B. Every measured scenario shrinks with gzip.

The branch includes main’s distinct-collision and subscription-restart changes. The documentation conflict resolution preserves both appended coverage entries. The earlier 6,533-test run includes restart publication, replay and distinct-collision receivers. All 14 compiler fingerprints remain unchanged after the replay fix. Final-head CI remains pending.

The size record binds the refactored sources to the final tests and seven rejected hostile controls. CodeRabbit remains paused after 8464ec977. Its latest completed review does not cover the later production fix or this refactor.

✅ Checklist

  • I have tested this code locally with pnpm test.

Targeted tests passed with at most two workers. Targeted size builds used existing dependencies. The full repository suite and dependency installations did not run.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

The changesets request patch releases for @tanstack/db and @tanstack/solid-db.

Request-error checker and bounded scope

Review 5719714297 found an oracle exemption that combined sibling subscriptions by source keys. The checker now retains subscription identity for later requests and coverage. Production lists the injected error in the distinguishing histories. A targeted omitted-error control passes the old account and fails the new health comparison. The existing 96-history grammar reaches that assertion in four histories.

The coverage-map owner remains the primary load-subset replay oracle. Its bounded claim covers held include failures during a loading sibling replay, demand retirement, and later own recovery. It observes core Collection rows and request-error identity after commands, quiet loading, and authoritative recovery. The versioned amendment records calibration, reach, intermediate failures, and limits.

All 45 primary tests pass on this branch. Focused TypeScript, ESLint, formatting, whitespace, and changed-file checks pass. ESLint retains two existing warnings. The full pnpm test suite did not run. This follow-up changes only the oracle and evidence. Runtime code and the measured shipped-size results remain unchanged.

Solid integration at current head

The Solid integration evidence below binds historical head a2e75c30402deb815abd01783ea816a2edfe3ea8, based on main 85392bd1d. The preceding merge preserved both conflicting coverage sections. Its four focused core files passed 5,967 tests. Incoming main changed select.ts. The earlier size measurements and links above retain their historical source bindings.

The new Solid fix tracks query preparation before it resolves the live-query Collection within untrack. This preserves callback and config input signals. It also prevents initial compilation from adding native row reads to the Collection memo's dependencies. The versioned integration record retains the failure, fix, evidence and limits.

  • Law: Source row reads cannot become query-input dependencies. Actual application query-input signals still cause recompilation. The Solid materialization owner and shared reactive query-identity contract supply authority.
  • Reach: The existing owner adds eight callback/config histories across two array depths and ordinary/native payloads. Each checks source-only writes and genuine input changes. The complete grammar requires 32 source-only-write cuts and eight query-input-change cuts, with per-history minima.
  • RED: Before production edits, the extended owner rejects eight native lifetime histories at the subscription comparison on fa5df11a. Twelve selected controls pass. The existing owner also reproduces the original eight CI failures.
  • GREEN: All 201 materialization tests and 336 tests across eight Solid runtime files pass locally. Focused TypeScript, ESLint, formatting, whitespace and changed-file checks pass.
  • Mutant: Restoring the old hook fails eight source-only subscription comparisons. Untracking query construction too fails all eight application-signal result comparisons.
  • Limits: These are finite actual-Solid-host histories at settled cuts. Local cached Vitest is 3.2.4 with Solid 1.9.11. CI uses Vitest 4.1.12. Runtime counts exclude type-only registration. Native-source-only value liveness, other frameworks and browser rendering need separate evidence. Full pnpm test and builds did not run. Fresh CI must check this head. CodeRabbit remains paused on 8464ec977, with no external review of this fix.

Shared replay admission review at 0b53825

A new include now joins replay publication when it starts. Sibling settlement cannot expose an incomplete replacement. This port preserves the callback compiler, joined-source gates and Solid input preparation. The port record binds the historical port sources. The nine-item amendment gives the full law, experiments, item accounting and limits.

  • Law: Architecture law 9 requires new demand to share the active replay's publication hold. Replay verdicts remain subscription-scoped. A failed move need not become successful after a later retry.
  • Reach: The new 48-history settlement grammar measures 24 late active settlements and 12 retries while a sibling loads. The original sibling grammar's receipt counts are 44 failures, nine retirements during commands and 12 own recoveries. The older model-derived retirement count 33 remains historical.
  • RED: All 48 new histories fail the existing retention comparison on unchanged a2e75c3 production before this port.
  • GREEN: All 46 primary tests and 21 neighboring tests pass. Both 80-history SQLite campaigns and two existing final-delivery replays pass. Focused TypeScript, ESLint, formatting, whitespace and pnpm lint:changed pass. ESLint retains two existing warnings.
  • Mutant: Admission removal fails retention. Latest-own-error and omitted-owed-error controls fail their existing public comparisons. Browser restart and final-commit omissions fail public comparisons.
  • Limits: Controlled core adapter histories and Node-host SQLite/coordinator streams bound this evidence. It supplies no arbitrary-provider, framework, Effect or browser-process closure. Compiler and Solid source hashes match a2e75c3. The new shared runtime changes supersede prior runtime fingerprints. Earlier shipped-size measurements remain historical. Full pnpm test and builds did not run.

The terminal grammar now preserves arbitrary final states and constructs reset or stop endings. Actual final-branch reach prevents a successful campaign from hiding a missing restart path. Seven review findings received fixes. Two proposed product obligations conflict with the accepted operation/verdict contracts. The coverage map explicitly records the earlier source-wide error-order comparison correction.

Current-head CI is pending separately from these local results. CodeRabbit remains paused at historical commit 8464ec977 and supplies no external review of this port. PR #2312 remains unmerged.

Oracle review follow-up at 72990f8

Review 5738453581 found one false coverage claim. Ordinary durable/server divergence counted as a lagging commit rewrite. Delivered-message provenance now requires an older same-key commit over a newer peer commit. The grammar constructs that overwrite before final catch-up. Existing histories, comparisons, known gaps, budgets and reach minima remain. Historical rewrite figures describe divergence corrections.

The proposed deferred-demand completion cycle does not occur on the reported path. Existing resumption removes its parked participant before acquisition. A real self-join grammar checks 32 histories across subscriber/preload, row count, result timing and settlement order. Every history reaches deferred demand joining a sibling replay and finishes after controlled success. Retaining the parked participant makes all 32 fail readiness.

Both branches pass all 540 deferred-owner tests, both 80-history browser campaigns and two existing final-delivery replays. Fixed/random actual overwrite reach is 25/18 on the release branch and 25/25 on callback. Omitting final commit after actual overwrite fails the durable/public comparison. Direct seed/path replay reproduces that failure. Focused TypeScript, ESLint, formatting, whitespace and changed-file checks pass.

The versioned review amendment records one fixed finding, one refutation, calibrations, grammar controls and limits. This follow-up changes only tests and evidence. Shipped sources match the preceding head. Evidence remains finite core acquisition and Node SQLite/coordinator histories with controlled Electric messages. Full pnpm test and builds did not run. New-head CI and integration of the release branch with main require separate evaluation. Neither PR merged, and release publication did not start.

CodeRabbit remains paused at 8464ec977. Its completed review does not cover the later callback, compiler, Solid or replay changes.

Walkthrough

The compiler now separates authored output from callback-input views and carries those views through query routes. It caches compilation results by metadata mode and combines repeated ordered-source metadata. New oracle receivers and tests cover callback inputs, cache reuse, ordered windows, and subscription-owned replay failures.

Changes: Callback metadata and query results

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define callback metadata and expected shapes
packages/db/src/query/compiler/route-metadata.ts, packages/db/src/query/compiler/types.ts, packages/db/tests/query/virtual-row-fields-input-oracle.ts
The compiler adds internal callback metadata and stores compilation results separately by metadata mode. The oracle defines expected source, projection, inline, and output shapes.
Transport callback views through compilation
packages/db/src/query/compiler/index.ts, packages/db/src/query/compiler/joins.ts, packages/db/src/query/compiler/parent-routes.ts
The compiler carries callback views through FROM, joins, subqueries, and unions. Functional WHERE, SELECT, and HAVING callbacks receive extracted views. Authored selected output remains separate.
Combine ordered-source metadata and test windows
packages/db/src/query/compiler/order-by.ts, packages/db/tests/query/ordered-compiler-cache-driver.ts, packages/db/tests/query/ordered-work-oracle.property.test.ts
Repeated references to a lexical source combine window bounds, data demand, and full-source requirements. The receiver tests initial, moved, and returned windows.
Exercise callback, inline, and cache histories
packages/db/tests/query/virtual-row-fields-input-driver.ts, packages/db/tests/query/virtual-row-fields-input-oracle.test.ts, packages/db/tests/query/compiler/basic.test.ts, packages/db/package.json
The receiver and oracle test callback inputs, outputs, inline forms, cache modes, and lifecycle cuts. Compiler tests inspect result tuples, and the oracle test is added to the test:oracles command.
Compare replay failures by subscription
packages/db/tests/query/load-subset-replay-refinement-oracle.test.ts
Replay checks now associate loads with subscriptions and compare replay failures within the rejecting subscription. A generated campaign checks own- and sibling-subscription comparisons.
Document coverage and release details
packages/db/src/query/live/ARCHITECTURE.md, docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md, docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/*, .changeset/fix-correlated-callback-metadata.md
The documents describe callback-input rules, receiver coverage, replay-error comparisons, runtime results, and stated limits. A patch changeset records the package update.

Key cached results by publishCollectionRoot.

The cache currently uses only rawQuery. Recursive compilation can reuse the same CompilationResult when the same uncorrelated QueryIR is compiled with publishCollectionRoot = false and true. These modes use different callback and output metadata handling, so the wrong result can expose incorrect reserved metadata in derived query results.

Store one result per publication mode in the existing cache.

Update the compilation cache lookup and storage so each raw query retains a

Law: October 30 maintainer decision extends O12 to select, where and having inputs while retaining authored inline output. Optional caches preserve results. Ordered source loading covers every retained window.
Reach: all 22,502 metadata states and 432 added ordered states reached once across the declared finite grammars.
RED: extended callback owner rejected 1,102 comparisons before callback edits; ordered owner rejected 48 histories before its registration fix. Real Effect receiver rejects 203 comparisons on PR base.
GREEN: 5,912 tests across eight suites; focused TypeScript, ESLint, formatting, whitespace and lint:changed pass.
Mutant: WHERE-only 551 failures; all-predicate normalization 696; raw-only cache 26; ordered-plan overwrite 48. All intended comparisons.
Limits: finite core source-input/lifecycle witnesses; compiler cache initial drain; union cloning can prevent original-key reuse; controlled ordered compiler/loader cut. Static metadata and P11/P12 gaps remain open. See docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/callback-metadata.md for source bindings and historical process limits.

Avoid building callback-only views for ordinary root output.

finalizeRow computes callbackSelected for every row. For non-fnSelect rows, this calls transformPublicContainers, attachVirtualPropsToSelected, and route stripping, then carries the result in tuple position 5. Keep this work only for paths consumed by a source adapter callback view.

packages/db/src/query/compiler/order-by.ts:341-367
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Preserve an earlier joined-filter dependency when the later plan has none.

An ordered inner query with a cross-alias WHERE can register joinedFilterSourceId. If an outer ordered query orders through that same QueryRef source without its own join, the later plan sets this field to undefined. The spread at this merge erases the dependency.

OrderedSourceLoader.loadMore() then skips hasPendingJoinedWork() and can load the ordered page before the joined source is ready.

578-584: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Keep replay-failure retirement within the same subscription.

If subscription B loads keys that subscription A failed to load, settleParticipant removes A’s failure from barrier.failures. A later error-order check can then treat a newer failure from A as its earliest deciding failure. This conflicts with the subscription-scoped comparison added at Line 1385. Require load.subscription === failed.subscription before deleting the failure. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Resolve the oracle coverage map append conflict by retaining both replay
retirement and framework snapshot-isolation records verbatim.

Validation: 5,967 focused metadata, Effect, context-transport and ordered
loading tests passed. lint:changed and coverage-map formatting passed.
Track query input preparation before resolving the live-query Collection
outside Solid dependency tracking. Preserve reactive callback and config
inputs while avoiding native-row-driven binding recreation.

Law: result row reads cannot add query-input dependencies; real input
signals still compile again. Authority: reactive query-identity contract
and Solid row-materialization owner; versioned record in
 docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/callback-metadata.md.
Reach:32 source-only-write histories and8 query-input-change histories,
each with its own required checkpoint.
RED: extended lifetime owner on fa5df11 fails8 native histories at the
source-only subscription comparison,12 controls pass.
GREEN:201 owner tests and336 Solid runtime tests pass; focused TS,
ESLint, changed-file lint, formatting and whitespace pass.
Mutants: original hook fails8 source-only comparisons; over-untracked
hook fails all8 application-signal result comparisons.
Limits: finite settled actual Solid host; local Vitest3.2.4 vs CI4.1.12;
full pnpm test and builds not run. No other-framework claim.
Law: ARCHITECTURE law9 / Replay participants and failure requires demand
started during sibling replay to hold complete publication. Verdicts stay
subscription-scoped under Atomic window publication.

Reach: 48 new direction/width/order/outcome/waiting-move histories, with24
late active settlements and12 retry starts. Existing receipt reach44/9/12.
RED: all48 public retention failures on unchanged repair ec25 and callback
a2e75c3 before each production edit. Earlier masked probes are retained.
GREEN: each branch passes46 primary,21 neighboring and4 browser tests,
including both80-history campaigns and both final-delivery replays.
Mutant: admission removal, latest own error, omitted owed error, final
restart omission and final commit omission fail intended public comparisons.
Limits: controlled core adapters and Node-host SQLite/coordinator streams;
finite one-level include histories. Full pnpm test/builds not run. Reach
corrections after first runtime trial are explicitly recorded.

Preserve arbitrary browser endings with reset/stop terminal regimes and
measure actual final-catchup branches. Remove model-only pseudo-calibration,
measure sibling reach from adapter receipts, and correct error-scope prose.
Lossless review record: seven fixed-now, two accepted-design, no deferrals.
