Type of Change

  • Enhancement / new feature

Description

Goal: expose fresh rebuilds through the standard template so custom-images can adopt it without serving cached packages or signatures.

Adds boolean docker-build-no-cache, default false, and forwards it to single-arch and native multi-arch builds. The updated action always checks base images for updates. Documentation clarifies that custom build outputs are single-arch-only.

Dependencies: requires gitops-github-action #171; enables custom-images #537. Merge/release order: action → template → migration.

The action SHA currently points to the dependency branch commit. Replace it and its pending-release comment after the action release; then release this template and update the migration’s pin.

Review: verify input types, defaults, forwarding and all three action pins. Workflow linting and wiring checks passed.

intent(image-freshness): let scheduled image releases bypass persistent build cache through the shared template.
decision(cache-default): retain caching unless the caller opts out; the action always checks base images for updates.
constraint(release-order): the action pin references local CORE-5013 commit 58aa5ca; publish upstream and finalize release pins before using this template.
constraint(release-order): v10.0.0 includes the merged freshness controls, replacing the temporary dependency branch pin.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an option to rerun Dockerfile steps without importing or exporting an external Docker cache.
  • Improvements
    • Clarified that custom build outputs apply to single-architecture builds; multi-architecture builds use a digest exporter and default compression.
    • Updated the GitOps workflow integration to a newer version.

Walkthrough

The GitOps workflow adds a docker-build-no-cache input and passes it to build invocations. It upgrades three action references to v10.0.0. The workflow and README clarify output settings for single-architecture and multi-architecture builds.

GitOps Docker build options

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure GitOps Docker builds
.github/workflows/template_gitops.yml, README.md
The workflow adds the optional docker-build-no-cache input and passes it to single-architecture and multi-architecture build invocations. All three GitOps action references change from v9.0.0 to v10.0.0. The workflow and README describe custom outputs for single-architecture builds and digest export with default compression for multi-architecture builds. The README example includes docker-build-no-cache: true.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 338ad

The documented build options match the workflow’s behavior, and no issue remains that should block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c857b

The workflow preserves its permissions, credential selection and build-to-deploy gates. No introduced security issue was demonstrated, but the upgraded action’s complete behavior, release provenance and failure recovery remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The upgraded action operates within the existing authority to publish images to configured registries and update configured GitOps repositories. Consequently, a dependency-level regression could affect those images and downstream deployments; the template does not establish a broader tenant or organization-wide exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The privileged boundary remains between caller-provided source/configuration and the action receiving registry and deployment credentials. The README states that callers must grant the required permissions; the workflow retains explicit permissions and immutable action references rather than introducing a new credential path.

decision(build-examples): show custom outputs separately because native multi-arch builds use the generated digest exporter and ignore those settings.
