SEO pass on the GitHub Pages site (docs/). On-page and technical only; nothing here needs an account or external service.

Changes

  • Title and description rewritten to lead with the search terms people use ("Elite Dangerous commander console", companion app, trade routes, exobiology, colonisation); title 60 chars, description 155 chars.
  • Share image: og:image pointed at an SVG, which Facebook, Slack, Discord, LinkedIn and X do not render. Added a real 1200x630 PNG (assets/og-image.png) with og:image:width/height/type/alt, og:locale and twitter:image:alt.
  • One visible <h1> ("Commander console for Elite Dangerous"); it was visually hidden before, which search engines treat as weaker. Logo image has explicit width/height (no layout shift) and a plain alt.
  • Structured data: a single JSON-LD @graph (Organization, WebSite, SoftwareApplication with featureList, softwareHelp, downloadUrl, free offer, FAQPage). The FAQ JSON-LD and the visible FAQ are generated from the same list, so they cannot drift apart.
  • FAQ section (7 <details> questions: cost, account/API key, memory reading, platforms, features, data, Odyssey/colonisation) for long-tail queries; pure HTML, no JS.
  • Icons: PNG favicon, apple-touch-icon (180), 192px icon (used as the Organization logo); theme-color and color-scheme.
  • Links: descriptive anchor text ("Download EDNexus", "EDNexus on GitHub"), download points at /releases/latest.
  • sitemap.xml gets lastmod; robots.txt unchanged in behaviour; new 404.html (noindex) that GitHub Pages serves for unknown URLs.

Deliberately not claimed

The site and share image say "free" and "source on GitHub", not "open source": the repo still has no LICENSE file (the README says open-source, the Flatpak metadata says proprietary). Settle the licence, then the wording can be strengthened.

Verified

JSON-LD parses and has the expected 4 types; sitemap is well-formed XML; no duplicate ids; every in-page anchor resolves; exactly one <h1>; no horizontal overflow at phone width (checked in the browser pane). Not validated with Google's Rich Results Test or a social-card debugger (they need the deployed URL).

After merge (manual, needs the site owner)

  1. Add the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools (URL-prefix property for https://signal-thread.github.io/EDNexus/), verify with the HTML-tag method, and submit sitemap.xml.
  2. Run the live URL through the Rich Results Test and a social-card debugger.
  3. The repo's About section and topics matter for GitHub search: keep the homepage URL set and add topics such as elite-dangerous, elite-dangerous-tool, exobiology, colonisation (several already exist).

…eting-level

No issue or PR links or numbers; themes and benefits instead of implementation detail. Feature cards
lose mechanics (checksums, SDK, engine start-up); developer build instructions move into a collapsed
section.

Update: the roadmap section is now a generic Coming soon (benefit-focused themes, no issue/PR links or numbers, no implementation detail, and an explicit 'no dates, no promises' note). Feature cards were de-jargoned (no checksums, SDK or engine wording; 'Developer mode' is now 'Demo mode'), the plugin SDK card moved into Coming soon as 'Built with the community', and the build-from-source commands are collapsed under 'For developers'. The only GitHub link left in that area is the repo home.
