fix(chat-ui): render lists that continue numbering after a paragraph line - #9405
Agents often split a numbered list into sections and continue the numbering:
**Narrow edge cases**4. First
5. Second
CommonMark lets only a list that starts at 1. interrupt a paragraph. So the chat rendered everything from 4. onward as one run-on paragraph.
Fix
ChatMarkdown now passes its text through separateOrderedLists. When an ordered item numbered other than 1 comes right after a paragraph line, it adds a blank line before the item, so the list renders and keeps its start number.
It does not change:
lines inside code fences
lists and their continuation lines
lines after headings
blockquotes and tables
Validation
Unit tests for the change and for the cases left untouched. packages/chat-ui suite: 86 pass.
Rendered the sample: it now produces <ol start="4">.
tsc and biome are clean.
Out of scope: mobile uses its own renderer (apps/mobile/components/ai-elements/message.tsx).
Summary by cubic
Fixes chat rendering of numbered lists that continue numbering after a paragraph line. Agents often split a numbered list into sections (e.g., **Follow-ups**\n4. First), but CommonMark only lets a list starting at 1 interrupt a paragraph, so everything rendered as one run-on paragraph.
ChatMarkdown now passes its text through separateOrderedLists, which inserts a blank line before ordered items numbered other than 1 that follow a paragraph line, so the list renders and keeps its start number.
Code fences, existing lists, and lines after headings, blockquotes, and tables are left untouched.
Written for commit 06410ad. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved Markdown rendering for numbered lists that continue after a paragraph, so they appear as distinct lists.
Preserved existing formatting for numbered lists and other Markdown content.
…line
CommonMark lets only a list that starts at 1 interrupt a paragraph, so agent
replies like "**Follow-ups**\n4. ..." rendered as one run-on paragraph.
ChatMarkdown now adds the missing blank line before such a list, outside
code fences and without touching existing lists.
ChatMarkdown now preprocesses Markdown with separateOrderedLists before rendering it with Streamdown. The utility inserts a blank line before qualifying ordered-list items and preserves existing list structure and block content covered by tests.
Changes: Markdown rendering
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Ordered-list preprocessing and rendering packages/chat-ui/src/components/ChatMarkdown/ChatMarkdown.tsx, packages/chat-ui/src/components/ChatMarkdown/utils/separateOrderedLists/*
The utility separates qualifying ordered-list items from preceding paragraphs. ChatMarkdown memoizes the processed Markdown and passes it to Streamdown. Tests cover existing lists, headings, blockquotes, and fenced code blocks.
The change fixes continued list numbering, but some messages containing nested code fences, list continuations, or multiline inline code can render incorrectly. These are bounded display issues; merging requires accepting them or correcting the preprocessing first.

Track indented code blocks before a paragraph line.
After an indented code block, an unindented paragraph line does not set inParagraph. For input const x = 1;\nFollow-ups\n4. Fourth, the item 4. Fourth gets no blank line, so it stays in the paragraph and the list does not render. The next paragraph line after a code block needs the same handling as one after a blank line.

Update the blockStart and inParagraph tracking in separateOrderedLists so an
unindented line following an indented code block starts a paragraph, as it would
after a blank line. Preserve the expected separation before a subsequent
ordered-list item.
Add a render-level test for a numbered list after a paragraph.
ChatMarkdown.test.tsx and the desktop tests that import ChatMarkdown do not render an ordered list that follows a paragraph line. The new separateOrderedLists test checks only the returned string. If ChatMarkdown passed unseparated children to Streamdown, or dropped the start attribute, the existing link tests would still pass.
Without the blank line, 4. cannot interrupt the paragraph. The item renders as paragraph text, and no start="4" appears. An assertion on start="4" fails for either regression.

FENCE only matches a fence at the start of a line. For `- ```` no fence opens, so the indented closing fence opens one instead. This inserts a blank line inside the code and leaves later ordered lists unseparated. Match fence markers after list-item prefixes, and close the fence on the matching closing fence.

Stop inserting the blank line inside an open inline code span.
The blank line is inserted before any ordered item numbered other than 1 that follows a paragraph line. The function does not track inline code, so a multiline code span with a continuation line such as `4. beta`` is split. The paragraph ends, the backticks render literally, and the line becomes a list item. Track open backtick runs in the current paragraph, and skip the insertion while a span remains open.

Require a delimiter row before treating a pipe line as a table.
OTHER_BLOCK matches every line that starts with |. For Instructions\n| grep foo\n4. Continue, the 4. item gets no blank line and stays in the paragraph. Treat a pipe line as a table block only when the next line is a delimiter row, such as |---|---|.
No diff is proposed. Removing \| from OTHER_BLOCK would also change the table handling that the PR states must stay untouched.
