fix the unchanged-skip test that failed at random on CI - #658
derive_unchanged_skip_test kept failing on CI with an [E] and no message, which looked like the test process dying. it wasn't: the snapshot comparison failed and printed both multi-megabyte snapshots, and the CI log stopped right there. the test now names the first table, row and place where the two snapshots part.
with that visible, the actual difference was the oldest day's evening. a day's waking hours end at tonight's sleep, which comes from the next day's stored window. when a pass derives several days at once, a day old enough to finalize could read that window before the next day had stored it, keep its evening running to midnight and lock that in. which day finished first decided it, so the two halves of the test disagreed about half the time on CI. that's a real bug on a phone working through a backlog too, not just in the test. such a day now stays pending for one more pass, which reads the window and finalizes it.
the snapshot also drops the baselines' build date, which is the wall-clock day and differed when the two halves ran either side of midnight.
Summary by Sourcery
Defer finalization until dependent evening sleep data is available and make unchanged-derivation failures actionable.
Bug Fixes:
Prevent days from being finalized or marked unchanged before the following day's sleep window is available, eliminating order-dependent derivation results during backlog processing.
Ensure failed second-half recovery does not preserve a finalized state for a day whose evening data is still pending.
Enhancements:
Replace direct day-pool execution with tracked derivation scheduling so dependent days can detect unfinished work in the same pass.
Tests:
Add coverage for pending-evening finalization, unchanged fingerprinting, and failed second-half recovery.
Improve snapshot mismatch diagnostics by reporting the first differing table, row, column, and string position while normalizing build-date metadata.

Bug Fixes
Sleep-day results now remain pending while the following night’s sleep window is still being processed or has not yet been recorded. Age-based finalization waits until that window is no longer pending, helping prevent results from being finalized too early. Forced finalization behavior is unchanged. This makes results more consistent when consecutive days are processed together, including during rescans.
a mismatch printed both multi-megabyte snapshots, and on CI the log was cut
off right after the failure line, so it looked like the test process had
died. it now names the table, the row and where the values part.
a day's waking hours end at tonight's sleep, which comes from the next
day's stored window. in a pass that derives several days at once, a day
old enough to finalize could read that window before the next day had
stored it, keep its evening to midnight and lock that in for good,
depending only on which day finished first. such a day now stays pending
for one more pass, which reads the window and finalizes it.

Summary
Prepared-day pending flag lib/compute/derive_prepare.dart
PreparedDerivationDay adds tonightPending, with a default of false. JSON serialization and deserialization include the flag. SleepSessionCandidate.toPreparedDay accepts and forwards it.
Day-pool tracking and finalization lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart
run, runDays, quiet-level repasses, and recent rescans use _runDayPool to track unfinished days. Preparation sets tonightPending when the next day has no stored sleep window and remains unfinished in the pass. Age-based finalization, carried-forward recovery results, and settled status check the flag.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review cf7ca
This change fixes the intermittent unchanged-skip failure by holding a day while its next day is still deriving. If the next day's derivation fails, the previous day can still finalize without its evening sleep data and may not be repaired later. Handle that failure path before merging.

Prevent days from being finalized before the next day’s sleep window is available during concurrent derivation.
Replace direct concurrency pools with a tracked day pool that records unfinished days in the current pass.
Read the next day’s stored sleep window and mark the current day as pending when that window is not yet available.
Carry the pending state through prepared-day serialization and candidate conversion.
Block finalization of pending days so a subsequent pass can resolve and persist the correct evening sleep boundary.
Make unchanged-skip snapshot failures actionable and stable across midnight.

a next day whose stored window is empty has no span either, so it holds
the day the same as a missing row. a held day also no longer records its
inputs as unchanged, or a second held pass could store a fingerprint and
skip the day before it ever read tonight's window.

Keep recovered finalized days open while tonight is pending.
When the second half fails, the recovery path can restore prevFinalized even when day.tonightPending is true. recoveryOutcome returns finalizedByAge || prevFinalized on the complete-recovery branch, and the pending check only gates finalizedByAge. A day that was finalized earlier can then stay finalized while its evening still waits for the next day's window. The pending hold does not apply to that row. The fix must keep the existing forceFinalize behavior for imports.

Update the assignment to effectiveFinalized from outcome.finalized so a
recovered finalized day remains open while day.tonightPending is true, except
when forceFinalize is enabled. Preserve the existing finalization behavior for
non-pending days and forced imports.

the recovery path for a failed second half restored the previous row's
finalized flag, so a held day that had been finalized before stayed locked
anyway. imports still force-finalize.
@coderabbitai on the outside-diff note at derivation_engine.dart:6496: right, the recovery path restored the previous row's finalized flag past the hold. fixed in cf7caac with the gate you suggested, outcome.finalized && (forceFinalize || !day.tonightPending); forceFinalize is only set on the import path, which has no next pass to wait for. a test finalizes a day, then re-derives it while held with its second half failing, and checks the carried-forward row is not finalized.
@abdulsaheel Thanks. I confirmed the gate in cf7caac2. It prevents the recovery path from restoring a finalized flag while day.tonightPending is true, unless forceFinalize applies.
The regression test covers an already-finalized day, a held re-derive, and a failed second half. It checks that the carried-forward row is no longer finalized. This addresses the outside-diff concern.
I inspected the code and test but did not run the test.

Learning: Within repository "OpenStrap/edge", only for files matching one of ["lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart"]: When reviewing finalization or failed-second-half recovery in lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart, verify that carrying forward a previous row cannot restore its finalized flag while day.tonightPending is true. Apply the hold to the recovery outcome as well as normal finalization, preserving the gate outcome.finalized && (forceFinalize || !day.tonightPending) or equivalent behavior. Preserve the forceFinalize exception for imports that have no later derivation pass. Check regression coverage that first finalizes a day, then re-derives it while held with its second half failing, and verifies that the carried-forward row is not finalized.

## 5. How to review this repo
**CI does run on PRs.** `.github/workflows/test.yml` runs `flutter analyze` +
`flutter test` on every pull request and on push to `main`.
`.github/workflows/build.yml` (the APK/IPA release) is the one gated to
`push: tags: ['v*']` — it doesn't touch PRs. `test/` is large and not flat
(it has `adapters/`, `support/`, and other subdirectories alongside the
top-level test files). Several regression tests are named for the bug they pin
(`readiness_flash_test`, `readiness_freeze_test`, `readiness_saturation_test`,
`readiness_baseline_pollution_test`). A behavior change with no accompanying
test is a real finding — CI passing doesn't mean the right test exists.

Follow-up Comments
Hold the previous day when next-day preparation fails.
4085-4086: Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Hold the previous day when next-day preparation fails.
When _prepareTargetDay(nextDayId) throws, processDay catches the error. _runDayPool then removes nextDayId from _passUnfinished. The next day stores no sleep window, so the previous day reads no stored span and no pending flag. An aged previous day can finalize with its tonight sleep missing. Normal later passes may not revisit a finalized day, so a successful retry of the next day may not repair it.
Dispatch is newest-first, so the next day is prepared before the previous day in a sequential pass. If the next day fails first, the previous day sees no span and no pending entry. This gap is left open by the hold. Track failed next-day IDs for the pass and treat them as pending, or require a successful next-day result before finalizing. Add a regression test that fails the next day's preparation and checks that the previous day is not finalized.

Review comment at @lib/compute/derivation_engine.dart around lines 4085 - 4086:
Update the `tonightPending` logic in `processDay` to also treat a `nextDayId`
whose preparation failed during the current pass as pending, even after
`_runDayPool` removes it from `_passUnfinished`. Track failed next-day IDs for
the pass and clear that tracking at the appropriate pass boundary; add a
regression test confirming the previous day is not finalized when next-day
preparation fails.

a cold first pass can hold the day when the next day's window lands after
it, which is the case the hold exists for, so the test now takes a second

Main's OpenStrap#658 fixes the same finalization race this branch fixed in
41e8127 and ba7bd59 (a day finalized before the next night was stored),
and OpenStrap#659 took kAlgoVersion 119. Take main's derivation_engine.dart and drop
this branch's duplicate fix, its 118 -> 119 bump and its two derive
regression tests; main's derive_tonight_pending_test covers the case.
Kept from ba7bd59: LocalDb.close() no longer throws when an in-flight
writer open fails, with its two tests.
