Goal behind this:

class Standardize(Processor):
    handles_stypes = (Stype.numerical,)
    requires_fit = True

    mean: Tensor | EnsembleTensor[Tensor]
    scale: Tensor | EnsembleTensor[Tensor]

    def __init__(self, *, eps: float = 0.0):
        super().__init__()
        self.eps = eps
        self.register_buffer("mean", None)
        self.register_buffer("scale", None)

    def _fit(
        self,
        table: TableTensor | EnsembleTable,
        *,
        generator=None,
    ):
        numerical = table.numerical
        finite = numerical.isfinite()
        count = finite.sum(dim=-2, keepdim=True)
        values = numerical.masked_fill(~finite, float("nan"))

        mean = values.nansum(dim=-2, keepdim=True).div_(count)
        mean.masked_fill_(mean.isnan(), 0.0)

        variance = values.sub_(mean).square_()
        variance = variance.nansum(dim=-2, keepdim=True).div_(count)
        variance.masked_fill_(variance.isnan(), 0.0)

        scale = variance.sqrt()
        if self.eps == 0:
            constant = _constant_feature_mask(
                var=variance,
                mean=mean,
                num_samples=count,
            )
            scale.masked_fill_(constant, 1.0)
        else:
            scale.add_(self.eps)

        self.register_buffer("mean", mean)
        self.register_buffer("scale", scale)

    def _transform(self, table: TableTensor | EnsembleTable):
        numerical = (table.numerical - self.mean) / self.scale
        return table.replace_blocks(numerical=numerical)

    def _inverse_transform(self, table: TableTensor | EnsembleTable):
        numerical = table.numerical * self.scale + self.mean
        return table.replace_blocks(numerical=numerical)

With a future EnsembleTable.numerical property returning an EnsembleTensor and EnsembleTensor implementing torch_function, the reduction would return an EnsembleTensor while preserving grouping and member assignments. For a TableTensor, it would return a regular Tensor. register_buffer would handle either state type.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fitted ensemble-specific parameters are now handled consistently when models are saved, loaded, copied, or moved between devices.
    • Numerical processing and column shuffling retain their ensemble-specific state across these operations.
    • Non-persistent ensemble state remains excluded from saved model state while still moving with the model between devices.
    • Loading saved models now restores ensemble buffer state, including when the saved ensemble differs in size or shape.

EnsembleProcessor now registers EnsembleTensor values through a PyTorch module adapter that tracks groups and locations and handles persistence and loading. ShuffleColumns and four numerical processors store fitted state as EnsembleTensor buffers. Tests cover replacement, state restoration, deepcopy, and nonpersistent device movement.

Changes: Ensemble Tensor Buffer Support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ensemble buffer registration and state handling
sdm/nn/_buffer.py, sdm/processing/ensemble.py, test/processing/test_ensemble.py
_EnsembleTensorBuffer registers groups as indexed PyTorch buffers and handles module transformations and state-dict operations. EnsembleProcessor routes EnsembleTensor registration, assignment, and loading through the adapter. Tests cover tensor replacement, state restoration, deepcopy independence, and nonpersistent device movement.
Fitted processor state migration
sdm/processing/common/shuffle.py, sdm/processing/numerical/detrend.py, sdm/processing/numerical/flip_sign.py, sdm/processing/numerical/interpolate.py, sdm/processing/numerical/random_projection.py
These processors now store fitted permutations, parameters, values, indices, signs, or weights as EnsembleTensor buffers. Their processing paths read the stored groups.

test/processing/test_ensemble.py: 1

82-112: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Add a test that loads ensemble state into a fresh processor.

The test loads a Tensor into a None buffer. It restores an EnsembleTensor only into a processor whose buffer is already an adapter. The common restore path is a freshly constructed processor with register_buffer(name, None) that loads a fitted EnsembleTensor state. This path runs EnsembleProcessor._load_from_state_dict and builds EnsembleTensor(groups=(), locations=()). The path then rebuilds the buffers in _EnsembleTensorBuffer._load_from_state_dict. No test covers this path, and all five fitted processors depend on it.

Add a test like this:

def test_ensemble_buffer_loads_into_unfitted_processor() -> None:
    fitted = IdentityEnsembleProcessor()
    fitted.register_buffer("values", None)
    fitted.values = EnsembleTensor(
        groups=(torch.arange(6.0).reshape(2, 3),),
        locations=((0, 0), (0, 1)),
    )
    restored = IdentityEnsembleProcessor()
    restored.register_buffer("values", None)
    restored.load_state_dict(fitted.state_dict())
    values = cast(EnsembleTensor[torch.Tensor], restored.values)
    assert isinstance(values, EnsembleTensor)
    torch.testing.assert_close(values[1], torch.tensor([3.0, 4.0, 5.0]))
