Implemented a developer-oriented Python tool for visualizing, creating, inspecting, and editing the newly added tactile schema:

  1. Offline creation, editing and exporting of TactileShape files.
  2. Live visualization of glove motion, hand-skeleton motion, TactileShape, and TactileData received from IsaacCapture.
  3. Editing of the active tactile shape while live visualization is paused.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added tactile data and shape metadata support, including metadata transport and MCAP recording and replay.
    • Added a tactile feeder and printer example for publishing, viewing, recording, and replaying tactile frames.
    • Added a tactile visualizer for editing hand shapes, displaying live or mock tactile data, and replaying recordings.
    • Added Python interfaces for accessing tactile frames and shape information in retargeting workflows.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup, usage, and metadata guidance for the tactile examples and tracker configuration.

Internal only: ask Lotus Li (lotusl@nvidia.com) before using it.

tactile.fbs carries the per-frame TactileData. tactile_shape.fbs carries the
static TactileShape (bind-pose skeleton, taxel layout and skinning) with its
own TactileShapeRecord root, so it can be pushed, recorded and replayed on
its own collection. Both tables carry their element counts but no device id
or shape version: the collection id (live) or MCAP channel (replay) already
identifies a stream, and the shape is fixed for the life of the producer's
collections.

- trackers.toml: generated TactileTracker and TactileShapeTracker, both
defaulting to 16 KiB samples; 128 KiB samples failed in the CloudXR
runtime's IPC, and 16 KiB is the largest size in use.
- Python schema bindings with zero-copy NumPy views and validating
constructors (counts are derived from the arrays).
- TactileSource and TactileShapeSource; the shape source keeps the last
shape, since producers publish it rarely and replay reads one record per
update, so the recorded shapes run out after the first few frames.
- src/core/AGENTS.md: mypy rejects .shape[i] on schema NumPy properties.
- C++ and Python unit tests, and goldens for both schemas.

- TactileShape is its own root_type, with no Record wrapper: it has no
capture time. A new manifest key, record_type, lets a generated tracker
record its table as itself, at the sample's arrival time, and replay
publishes it as recorded; tactile_shape sets it.
- Joints are one [TactileJoint] array (bind pose and parent) and taxels
one [TactileTaxel] array (position, normal, tangent and the four
skinning slots), so per-attribute arrays can no longer disagree in
length. TaxelJointIndices and TaxelJointWeights fold into TactileTaxel.
- TactileData drops taxel_count, and TactileShape drops joint_count and
taxel_count: each vector carries its own length. The Python bindings
  drop the matching properties.
- Internal-only notes and the contact address are removed from the
schemas, the manifest, the bindings and the docstrings.

4253100703, 4253046707 and 4252502374.

The tactile and tactile_shape goldens are refreshed. Recordings made with
this branch's earlier drafts stop reading; the schemas are not on main, so
no other recordings are affected.

Add a generic `metadata` key to the tracker manifest. A pull tracker that
sets it gains get_metadata(), and reads the table from a companion
collection "<collection_id>/metadata" that the producer feeds with
SchemaMetadataPusher. The tracker adopts the first metadata it receives
for the session and publishes data only while the producer's metadata
matches it, so every frame a consumer sees can be read with
get_metadata(). The metadata is recorded once on "<channel>_metadata",
before any data it lets through, and replay reads it when the session
opens.

- The tactile_shape tracker is replaced by `metadata = "TactileShape"` on
the tactile tracker. One sample still carries the whole table. No
manifest entry sets record_type any more; the key stays for tables
  recorded as themselves.
- SchemaTracker::update() reports whether the collection is present and
can skip recording for a tick.
- The live and replay impls of a tracker with metadata come from their
own templates; the interface, facade, pybind block and recording
  traits gain `#if @HAS_METADATA@` blocks.
- TactileSource reads forces and shape from one TactileTracker, and
TactileShapeSource is removed: the tracker now holds the shape.

A metadata table can outgrow one tensor sample: TactileShape fits about
225 taxels in 16 KiB, and larger samples failed in the CloudXR runtime's
IPC. SchemaMetadataPusher now splits the encoded table into
TrackerMetadataChunk samples and pushes a few per frame, in a loop for as
long as it runs. SchemaMetadataReader reassembles them in any order and
with repeats, so a consumer that joins late or drops samples completes
the table on a later pass.

- tracker_metadata.fbs: each chunk carries an FNV-1a 64 hash of the whole
table, its size, the chunk index and count, and its byte offset. The
hash tells tables apart and checks the reassembled buffer.
- schema/tracker_metadata.hpp: split_tracker_metadata() and
TrackerMetadataAssembler. Chunks encode to at most
  TRACKER_METADATA_CHUNK_SIZE (16 KiB, which replaces
TRACKER_METADATA_SAMPLE_SIZE), and a table to at most 16 MiB.
- Losing the data collection also drops a partial reassembly, so the
producer that comes back is checked against chunks it sent itself.
- Python producers get split_tracker_metadata() to push the chunks with a
  TensorPushTracker.

Adds the tracker_metadata golden.

examples/tactile exercises the tactile tracker without hardware. The feeder publishes a configurable hand shape and force stream through TensorPushTracker, defaulting to 26 joints and 200 taxels. The printer reports the received shape and endpoint forces, records live sessions, and prints unpaced replay records without mislabeling session polls as sensor frames.

It served TactileShape.joint_parents while that was a [uint32] vector.
Joints are now TactileJoint structs, whose parent is read through a
strided field view, so nothing calls it.

record_type let a generated tracker record its table as itself, for the
tactile_shape tracker. TactileShape became the tactile tracker's
metadata, which SchemaMetadataReader records directly, so no manifest
entry sets record_type and every generated tracker records <Table>Record.

Remove the key and what only it reached: SchemaTracker's same-type
branch and its explicit log times, recorded_payload(), and their test
and AGENTS.md note. SchemaTracker keeps update()'s presence result and
its record flag, and McapTrackerChannels keeps the explicit-log-time
write(), both of which the metadata path uses.

split_tracker_metadata() already rejects a max_chunk_size above
TRACKER_METADATA_CHUNK_SIZE with the same std::invalid_argument, so the
pusher calls it directly.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds fixed metadata support for pull trackers, including chunked transport, generated live and replay implementations, and Python schema bindings. It adds tactile data and shape schemas, a DeviceIO tracker and retargeting source, plus feeder and printer examples. It also adds a Viser-based tactile visualizer with live, mock, and replay sources, shape editing, URDF configuration, and tests.

The tactile visualizer can crash an update, lose an edit, or show an inconsistent scene. This happens when live data arrives at the same time as a browser interaction, such as adding taxels or editing a field. The issue is limited to the developer tool, but it should be fixed before merge by serializing UI callbacks and the update loop with one lock.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Serialize the GUI callbacks and the run() update loop with one lock.

run() calls _consume_source() and _update_rendered_values() on the main thread. Viser runs the synchronous on_click, on_update and on_upload callbacks on its own worker threads. Both paths read and write the same state without a lock: self.document, _taxel_handles, _joint_handles, _bone_handles, _gizmo, _tree_*_inputs, the _programmatic flag, and the controller state.

These are concrete failures:

  • Add Taxels: append_grid_taxels replaces taxel_positions, taxel_normals and the other taxel arrays one at a time. During that window, skin_taxels on the main thread can read arrays of different lengths. _build_scene_handles also clears _taxel_handles while the loop iterates over it. The result is an IndexError, or a scene that shows stale handles.
  • Rejected edits: _edit_field_event and the gizmo callback assign self.document = backup. A remote shape replacement in _consume_source (_replace_document) can run at the same time. One of the two writes is then silently lost.
  • _programmatic flag: this flag is shared between threads. A real user edit can arrive while another thread has the flag set to True. _edit_field_event then drops that edit.

Add self._lock = threading.RLock() in __init__. Hold the lock for the whole body of each run() iteration and for the whole body of each Viser callback. A decorator helper that wraps every callback is enough.

Wrap every on_click, on_update, on_upload and on_rect_select callback body in with self._lock: too.

Heads-up: #1394 just merged. It moves only-include from [tool.hatch.build.targets.wheel] to [tool.hatch.build], so the sdist gets the same file list as the wheel. Without that, uv build packs the whole example directory into the sdist: media, recordings, a local uv.lock, build trees. Wheels and editable installs are unchanged.

Could you switch examples/tactile_visualizer/pyproject.toml to the layout in Adding an example?

[tool.hatch.build]
only-include = ["python/isaaccapture_examples/tactile_visualizer"]

[tool.hatch.build.targets.wheel]
sources = ["python"]

Nothing checks where only-include lives, so rebasing won't flag the old layout.

Separately, this branch adds examples/tactile/pyproject.toml, which main already has (now in the layout above). When you rebase, keep main's copy.
