Text column width

A suggestion:
Maybe the text column width could be automatically adjusted each time the window is resized?

text column width is normally the size of the field and the largest entry on the screen, you can double click the column borders to resize it.

Yes. But I still think, for cosmetic reason, if the width would be resized according to the window, we wouldn't see that vertical line that doesn't really make sense (at least when there is no more column).
Will also avoid me to double click on that column to resize it.
I don't know why it is resized to the text instead of taking all the empty space in the window. Maybe it's needed in some other configuration of LogExpert I didn't discovered yet?

Its just wasn't necessary to resize it to everything other then the largest line in the window.

And logexpert comes from a time where .net 3.5 was around, so there are some older programming concepts included, but with time this will be updated.

As we extract more and more business logic from the UI :)

So, in the end, do you agree that resizing the column so we don't see that vertical line and we don't have to click on the title to resize when longer comes in would be good, or do you want to close that request?

It's also happens to me quite often, that when this column is resized according to the (visible) window lines only and I scroll further down, where there is a line longer than on previous screen, I have to click on vertical bar anyway to see hidden part of that line(s).

Solution could be either: to resize vertical bar to the right size of the window automatically, or: make option in setting to resize vertical bar to the edge of the window (useless choice). Or maybe something else I can not think of right now.

Anyway, there are more important things to do than this feature, but as you said, maybe sometime in the future...

The issue I found it that a column does not change its width to show the full contents of a row somehow is related to

As you can see, the timestamp contents are truncated in the column by the automatic layout after opening the file or pressing F5. However, if I double-click on the text to enter "editing" mode, the in-place editor switches to a different font (seems some default hardcoded?) and that font always make the contents fit to the column width.

This hint seems suggesting the column width resizing is somehow determined by considering the font metrics, but obviously there are some glitches for matching the field contents and the column width which require to take the font metrics, windows zooming factor, resolution or even the rendering engine into account.

Also a side finding (when selecting a font size of 10 ;) ):

ps: feel free to move this comment to a separate post if not relevant, as I believe the problems I mentioned above remain valid as a bug report.

Edit font is different than display font, if you change the display font, the columns are not auto sized, this could be a feature, but is currently by design

I totally agree!
It just makes no sense to adjust the width of the text-column to the current visible lines, when another line currently out of sight might be longer.
In my case, there will never be any other column after text-column and there is soo much space free.

Additionally, the vertical line is just confusing my eyes.
my personal approach would be:

• always show all the content of the last column
• never limit it, because currently you cannot scroll horizontally in a column, so you HAVE to resize the column to see full content anyway

I found the setting - it helps

but what does the value mean?

Pixels? Number of characters? ...

When setting it to 500, measuring it with Pixlin results to 1235px

edit: it seams, that if the setting is lower then the currently visible max length of a line, it stretches the column to fit all content?
