Jorge Lopez

I am currently studying to get my associates degree in geography and then transferring to Cal Poly Pomona to obtain my Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. I plan to use GIS to aid me in my career when I become a civil engineer.

Covid 19 rates by population density

This map shows the relation between covid 19 rates and population density(images/disease mapping.png) Question: A geographic question that this map answers is where the event is happening and distribution through showing spatial patterns. Data: This dataset was obtained from ArcGIS from the New Jersey office of GIS in 2026. Method: For this map I created a proportional map based on population density and added the data to an existing map. I used the styles pane to adjust and fine tune the attributes for easier viewing. I also divided the population by area and again used the styles pane to visualize the population density area. A design choice I made and why: A specific choice I made was to use specific contrasting colors for easier visualizations between differing areas. A limitation of this map: This map cannot show or tell the reader about other geographic features like greenery or even streets so it would not be the best map to use if you need directions or street locations.

Covid-19 rates in New York City by zip code

This map shows the COVID-19 rates by zip code of New York City during 2020(images/covid rates by zipcode.png) Question: A geographic question that this map can answer is orientation and direction of certain locations and their proximity to each other through the use of the map scale. Data: This data was obtained through ArcGIS from the NYC department of health and mental hygiene in 2026 Method: This map was created with ArcGIS and I inserted text, the map image, and a legend. I changed the layout to better visualize the data and changed the color scheme to suit the needs of the map while changing the scheme to show natural breaks (jenks). A design choice I made and why: I chose to use natural breaks (jenks) to minimize variance between classes. A limitation of this map: this map is limited in that it doesn’t show terrain or landmarks that could be useful for navigation.

Where this is going

Through the rest of my time in this course and my future I plan to add more data to this portfolio to use in displaying my work and also showing my capabilities. I plan to add more projects as I work on them and also to fine tune this website into something that shows my character and is visually pleasing. I also plan to correct my mistakes when they become apparent and to grow my skills to better portray my data and ideas. I want to work this website and my data into something that accurately portrays my work abilities and my skills so that I can use this to my advantage when applying for jobs and furthering my career.
