Description

Automatic configuration checks and migrations can replace a manually configured mcp-for-unity executable with generated uvx configuration, discarding custom env settings. This change preserves the entire JSON file for user-managed stdio launchers while retaining package/version checks for generated launchers.

Automatic legacy migration also re-registers an already configured Claude Code client instead of selecting its explicit Unregister action, and both migrations leave malformed arguments unchanged.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • Documentation update
  • Test update

Changes Made

  • Preserves custom executables, Python commands, wrappers, environment variables, working directories, other servers, and formatting during automatic JSON checks and migrations.
  • Retains source/version validation for uvx and uv tool run, including value-taking global options before tool or between tool and run. Recognizes --trusted-host and the Python/preview option aliases while keeping custom uv run launchers unchanged.
  • Rejects arguments that are not arrays of strings before either automatic migration can rewrite them.
  • Routes automatic Claude Code migration through re-registration while retaining the explicit Configure/Unregister toggle.
  • Documents version ownership for manual launchers and how to explicitly restore generated settings. Configure All still intentionally generates configuration.

Compatibility / Package Source

  • Local package based on beta commit 142ea0af4890337f0ff6658df61db23982313717.
  • Unity 6000.3.20f1 on macOS.

Testing/Screenshots/Recordings

  • Unity 6000.3.20f1 EditMode: all 55 JsonManualStdioConfigurationTests passed, including 5 parameterized global-option cases that exercise status checks, both migrations, three argument forms, and custom-script preservation.
  • The same fixture against previous published commit b8d545246196be4941b31969f4d43c6321f8e3f5 passed the existing 50 cases and failed only the 5 new global-option cases.
  • An exact-helper probe passed 30 option/form/launcher combinations; the previous classifier incorrectly treated 10 valid uv tool run forms as custom launchers.
  • License-free C# compile: Runtime and Editor assemblies passed with Windows, macOS, and Linux defines using Unity 6000.3.20f1 references. The cached reference set reports 10 unavailable optional platform DLLs; compilation completed without errors.
  • git diff --check passed. The prescribed four-version check skipped all four Editors because those versions are not installed; these skips are not test passes.

Hosted checks for the updated commit are separate from these local results; upstream workflow execution may require maintainer approval.

Tests use isolated temporary configuration paths and a fake Claude Code configurator. They do not register or remove a real client. Windows/Linux execution and PlayMode/E2E behavior have not been verified.

Documentation Updates

Updates website/docs/getting-started/clients.md. Tool and resource definitions are unchanged.

Additional Notes

This addresses preservation of manual configuration from #1248. The Windows pywin32 installation conflict remains outside this change. Users manage server versions for custom launchers.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • JSON-based clients can use custom stdio launchers, such as an executable, Python interpreter, or wrapper. Status checks and automatic migrations preserve these configurations.
    • Package-runner configurations continue to receive package source and version checks. Explicitly reconfiguring a client replaces its custom launcher.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid stdio arguments are reported as an error instead of being accepted as a valid configuration.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on supported custom launchers and how they behave during status checks and migrations.

📝 Walkthrough

JSON client status checks recognize custom stdio launchers and preserve their configuration. Legacy and version migrations skip custom launchers while continuing to validate or refresh generated package runners. EditMode tests and documentation cover these behaviors.

Shared helpers locate Unity server entries, retrieve HTTP URL aliases, and identify custom stdio launchers. Status checks accept valid custom launchers and reject malformed argument shapes. Tests cover launcher variants, URL aliases, configuration preservation, and package-runner validation. Documentation describes these configuration rules and status behavior.

Legacy migration skips uninstalled clients and JSON clients with custom stdio settings, and records invalid JSON configurations as failures. Version migration refreshes eligible generated stdio configurations. Tests cover migration preservation and generated launcher updates.
