ci: add docs checks to every pull request - #1167
Conversation
Every page now has a title: in its front matter, so the new PR check can require it. Wrapper pages take the title of the page they include; the rest use their H1. All 29 are pages that aren't in the menu (mostly old Homey copies and the LED-1 and H-3 trees). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A new docs-checks workflow runs on PRs into dev and main and reports problems as annotations on the changed lines: - check_markdown.py: front matter title and description, heading levels that skip, more than one H1, images without alt text, and snippet includes that are missing or start inside the included page's front matter. Warns on em dashes and banned filler words. - check_secrets.py: ESPHome API encryption keys, generated OTA passwords, passwords typed into YAML, and common token formats (allows !secret and obvious placeholders). - check_images.py: photos carrying GPS location data. Warns on images over 1.5 MB that the PR adds or changes. - check_links.py: links, #anchors, filename case, and alt text on the built site, including the site-style links MkDocs doesn't validate. All four pass on the current wiki, and each was shown to fail on a planted example of every problem it covers. CONTRIBUTING.md, AGENTS.md, STYLE_GUIDE.md, and tools/docs-checks/README.md explain the checks and how to fix or run them; the style guide now also covers trimming secrets from recordings and stripping photo location data. ExifTool official documentation unqualified GPSLatitude XMP GPS tags -gps*= delete wildcard
💡 Result:
`-GPS*= ` (without the space) is a **tag-name wildcard**, not a request to delete only the EXIF GPS group. ExifTool’s official docs say unqualified tag names are updated in the preferred group **and any other location where a same-named tag already exists**; its API docs explicitly distinguish `gps*` from `gps:*`, noting that `gps*` also matches XMP GPS tags. So, for example, `-GPSLatitude=` can remove same-named EXIF and XMP tags if both are present, while `-GPS*=` deletes tags whose names start with “GPS” across groups. ([exiftool.org](https://exiftool.org/exiftool_pod2.html?utm_source=openai))
To target a group, qualify it: `-EXIF:GPS*=` for EXIF or `-XMP:GPS*=` for XMP. The official docs specifically show `-gps:all=` to delete the GPS group, and `-xmp:geotag=` to delete XMP GPS tags written by the geotag feature. Quote wildcard arguments on shells that expand `*`, e.g. `'-GPS*='`. ([exiftool.org](https://exiftool.org/exiftool_pod2.html?utm_source=openai))
The docs list XMP GPS tags such as `GPSLatitude` and `GPSLongitude`; the EXIF GPS table separately documents EXIF GPS tags. Thus the shared, unqualified names can refer to tags in either metadata group. ([exiftool.org](https://exiftool.org/TagNames/XMP.html?utm_source=openai))

Use the wildcard GPS removal command.
-gps:all= can leave XMP GPS coordinates. The checker’s unqualified GPSLatitude and GPSLongitude conditions can still detect those coordinates, so the contributor can remain blocked by a failing check. The checker does not publish the photo undetected, so this is a minor functional issue rather than a major security or privacy issue.

Split changed paths by line, not by whitespace.
The workflow supplies newline-separated paths. For a changed file such as docs/assets/setup photo.jpg, split() creates two entries, so the size warning never appears. Use splitlines() to preserve spaces in filenames.

Keep the front-matter value check on one line.
If title: is blank and description: follows it, \s* consumes the newline and \S matches the next field. The checker then accepts a page without a title. The same pattern can accept a blank description: when another field follows it. Match horizontal whitespace only, or parse the front matter as YAML.

Recognize valid HTML alt attributes.
If an image uses <img src="sensor.png" alt='Sensor'> or an uppercase ALT attribute, this search reports a missing alt value. Both attributes provide alt text, so the Markdown step can fail on valid markup. Accept valid attribute quoting and case, preferably with an HTML parser.

Tested: all four pass on the current wiki. In a scratch copy with one planted example of every problem (heading skip, missing alt, second H1, include into front matter, real-looking API key, OTA password, typed Wi-Fi password, GPS-tagged photo, broken link, missing anchor), every one was caught. This PR's own run is the end-to-end test on GitHub.
Also adds front matter titles to the 29 pages that lacked one (all outside the menu), so the title rule passes from day one. CONTRIBUTING.md, AGENTS.md, STYLE_GUIDE.md, and the new tools/docs-checks/README.md explain the checks, how to fix each failure, and how to run them locally.
