To use _Integration with AdGuard VPN_, both apps — AdGuard for Android and AdGuard VPN for Android — must be updated to their latest versions. Otherwise, the Integration mode will not be available

:::

AdGuard for Android creates a local VPN to filter traffic. Thus, other VPN apps cannot be used while AdGuard for Android is running. However, both AdGuard and [AdGuard VPN](https://adguard-vpn.com/) apps have Integrated modes that let you use them together.

In this mode, AdGuard VPN acts as an outbound proxy server through which AdGuard Ad Blocker routes its traffic. This allows AdGuard to create a VPN interface and block ads and trackers locally, while AdGuard VPN routes all traffic through a remote server.

# AdGuard VPN for Mac: Mac App Store version vs. standalone version

AdGuard VPN for Mac is available to download from two sources: our [official website](https://adguard-vpn.com/welcome.html) and the [Mac App Store](https://www.apple.com/ca/osx/apps/app-store/). While both these versions offer effective privacy protection, some features may differ between the two due to Apple’s policies regarding apps distributed through the Mac App Store. We will highlight and explain the main differences below.

## Subscription plans and payment methods

Both the standalone and Mac App Store versions of AdGuard VPN for Mac require a subscription to access all paid features. You can use AdGuard VPN for Mac without purchasing a subscription, but some functions will be limited. The available plans and payment methods differ depending on where you download the app:

- One-month subscription: available on both platforms
- One-year subscription: available on both platforms
- Two-year subscription: available on our official website

> If needed, users of the Mac App Store version can purchase a two-year subscription on our website using the same email address as for previous purchases of AdGuard VPN or AdGuard Ad Blocker.

### Standalone app

If you purchase AdGuard VPN for Mac on our website, your license will be linked to the email address provided during the purchase. You can then use this email address to activate AdGuard VPN on any supported device and manage the license in your [AdGuard account](https://adguardaccount.com/account/licenses). Alternatively, you can apply the license using the activation code you’ll receive after purchase.

### Mac App Store version

After completing the purchase, we recommend binding the license to your email address. Once bound, you can activate AdGuard VPN on any supported platform using your email address and access your license at any time via your [AdGuard account](https://adguardaccount.com/account/licenses). To do it, go to the *License* tab and click *Bind license*.

All devices activated by your license, regardless of which version you use, will appear in your AdGuard account as usual.

## Apple’s policies

Because of Apple’s App Store restrictions, some traffic attribution features work differently in the Mac App Store version. As a result, *Statistics* and app exclusions are not available in the current MAS version. We are working to get these features back in the future versions of the app.

## Different ways of operating

Another difference between the two app versions is the processes they use to do their work, and again the difference is due to Apple limitations.

The MAS version of AdGuard VPN for Mac uses Apple’s NetworkExtension framework. It allows developers to customize and extend key network functions of the operating system — for example, VPN management, Wi‑Fi configuration, and interaction with access points through Hotspot Helper — making networks more flexible and adaptable to specific app needs.
More broadly, the term “network extension” can also refer to any hardware or software means of expanding a network to improve its coverage, performance, or functionality.

The standalone version operates under the *utun* interface. Utun (short for user tunnel) is a virtual network interface in macOS that apps use to create a secure tunnel for your internet traffic. In practice, this means the app can route your data through an encrypted connection without changing your regular network settings.

## Summary

Both versions of AdGuard VPN for Mac protect your privacy, though they use slightly different means to achieve this. The main differences lie in the available subscription options and the way the apps work, based on Apple’s technical policies.

## What Safari extensions are

Safari extensions are small software programs that add functionality to the Safari web browser. They allow users to customize and enhance their browsing experience by adding features that are not natively built into the browser. AdGuard for Safari uses extensions primarily to apply filtering rules on websites opened in Safari.

## How it works

To block ads, trackers, and annoyances on websites, AdGuard uses filtering rules. The rules from AdGuard's and your custom filters are converted into ones comprehensible by Safari and are integrated into 6 Safari extensions:

- AdGuard General
- AdGuard Privacy
- AdGuard Social
- AdGuard Security
- AdGuard Custom
- AdGuard Other

Each content-blocking extension can include up to 150,000 active filtering rules. The number of rules within most filter groups does not surpass 150,000. However, if you activate too many language-specific or custom filters, you might exceed the limit. In such cases, random rules that are over the limit will be automatically disabled, which may lead to incorrect blocking. **We strongly recommend activating only the filters you need**.

There is also one more extension responsible for other features: _AdGuard for Safari_, which adds the AdGuard icon next to the search bar in Safari and allows using advanced rules to block complex ads.

![Safari extensions](https://cdn.adtidy.org/content/kb/ad_blocker/safari/adguard-for-safari-icon1.png)

More on each extension below.

## Content-blocking extensions

_AdGuard General_ applies rules from filters that you can find in _Filters_ → _Ad blocking_ and _Filters_ → _Language-specific_. This extension focuses on comprehensive ad blocking and includes filters for ads in specific languages.

_AdGuard Privacy_ applies rules from filters located in _Filters_ → _Privacy_. It blocks tracking mechanisms and ensures that your browsing activity remains private.

_AdGuard Social_ applies rules from filters that can be found in _Filters_ → _Social Widgets_ and _Filters_ → _Annoyances_. It blocks popups, social media buttons, online assistant windows, and other elements on web pages that you might find annoying.

_AdGuard Security_ applies rules from filters under _Filters_ → _Security_. This extension identifies and blocks potentially harmful elements, safeguarding users from malicious content.

_AdGuard Other_ applies rules from filters that that don't fall under the above-mentioned categories and that are located in _Filters_ → _Other_: _Filter unblocking search ads and self-promotion_, _AdGuard DNS filter_, and _AdGuard Experimental filter_.

_AdGuard Custom_ applies rules from filters that you add on your own to _Custom filters_.

User rules and allowlist rules are included into every extension.

## AdGuard for Safari

_AdGuard for Safari_ activates the AdGuard icon next to the search bar. It's useful if you want to quickly set up protection for a specific website or block ads manually. It also contains advanced rules that aren't converted to the format supported by Safari. These include [CSS rules](/general/ad-filtering/create-own-filters#cosmetic-css-rules), [extended CSS selectors](/general/ad-filtering/create-own-filters#extended-css-selectors), and [scriptlets](/general/ad-filtering/create-own-filters#scriptlets), which allow AdGuard to block complex ads, such as those on YouTube.

## How to manage Safari extensions

1. Open Safari and click _Safari_ in the upper left corner of the screen to expand the menu.

![Safari settings \*mobile](https://cdn.adtidy.org/content/kb/ad_blocker/safari/adguard-for-safari-settings1.png)

2. Click _Settings..._

3. Select _Extensions_.

![Extensions tab](https://cdn.adtidy.org/content/kb/ad_blocker/safari/adguard-for-safari-extensions1.png)

## Why AdGuard for Safari requires permission

When enabling the _AdGuard for Safari_ extension, you might notice that it requires **access to web page content** and **access to browsing history**. Here's why it needs these permissions:

- Access to web page content is required for manual ad blocking and advanced blocking rules to work correctly
- Access to browsing history is required to check the protection status on websites and determine which advanced rules should be applied
