Research PR. This PR changes no production revision semantics and chooses neither the G1 nor the G2 policy. The only src/ changes are comments.

Compares direct confidence-aware revision (A, CausalEdge64::revision) with NarsTables::build(n) for n ∈ {1, 2, 4, 8, 16}, using the real implementations. A's replay path and A's decision path are each checked bit-exact against replay_step and counterfactual_replay for every table resolution.

  • crates/lance-graph-planner/tests/d_rpf_table_1.rs: numeric surface, replay drift and decision flips (15 tests).
  • crates/lance-graph-planner/examples/d_rpf_table_1_bench.rs: throughput.
  • .claude/board/entries/2026-10-09-d-rpf-table-1-fast-path-cost.md: Pareto table, evaluated boundaries and kill conditions.

Answer

law memory replay dep / batch micro uniform cold broad max dF/dC uniform 8-step flips: verdict / load-bearing / class
A 0 32.7 / 15.7 ns 12.1 ns 11.5 ns 0 / 0 0 / 0 / 0
B1 256 KiB 7.4 / 7.0 ns 3.4 ns 19.0 ns 128 / 168 776 / 244 / 905 of 2048
B16 32.1 MiB 8.9 / 9.8 ns 29.2 ns 60.3 ns 113 / 14 96 / 77 / 426 of 2048

B2, B4 and B8 rows are in the entry.

  • B1 fails the pre-registered boundary. It is 2.2–4.4× faster on hot replay. On spread inputs it also flips about 38% of verdicts, about 12% of load-bearing calls and about 44% of Reaction classes.
  • No table resolution is decision-stable. Paying for resolution doesn't fix it: B16 keeps the hot-replay speed, but it is slower than A on random lookups and on a cold cache, and it still flips decisions.
  • The table approach only wins on a hot, dependent replay. A beats every table on a cold cache, and B8/B16 on random lookups.
  • The repository's own load-bearing fixture (cutting_a_load_bearing_edge_flips_the_verdict) is load-bearing only under B1. Under A and B2…B16, both arms clear the bar.
  • No production code reads any NarsTables revision today. This corrects D-RPF-CONF-0: measure the confidence revision surface before any policy change #1424: every CutContext comes from a test, example or probe, NarsEngine::tables is never read, and the shader driver discards its lookup.
  • History. build(1) was a deliberate default (2026-03-31) chosen without a benchmark. Until 2026-09-10 that hot path read the deduction table.

Also in this PR

  • Comment fixes. "16 for full precision" now says "maximum table resolution". The L1/L2 residency claims are replaced with measured figures. No behaviour change.
  • T2. Pins that Pearl bits 40..42 are a subset mask, not a ladder.
  • T4. Pins learn against isa::contracts::LEARN over all eight plasticity patterns.

Both guards are in separate commits.

Checks

  • Disable runs, all red:
    • B1 replaced by A;
    • all c_levels forced to 1;
    • replay_step stops writing the table result;
    • a confidence-blind flip counter;
    • the bench's deliberately slow A, about 40× slower;
    • T2 and T4 each against a broken variant.
  • Full planner suite and full causal-edge suite pass.
  • fmt is clean. clippy is clean on the new files. causal-edge's five pre-existing edge.rs clippy errors predate this PR.
  • The entries index and the supersession index are current.

Open

  • G2: which law future wiring should use.
  • G1: the (255,255) cell.
  • The load-bearing fixture and the DEFAULT_FREQUENCY_BAR rationale need re-deriving under whichever law is chosen. The rationale cites "confidence saturates at 170", which is B1's constant.
  • forward's truth computation is discarded on every replay step.

… resolutions vs A, plus a throughput bench

Compares direct ISA revision (A) with NarsTables::build(n) for n in
{1,2,4,8,16} through the real implementations. The A replay goes through
step_with, which is replay_step's body with the law as a parameter and is
pinned bit-exact against replay_step for every table; the A decision goes
through decide, pinned against counterfactual_replay the same way.

Pins: the numeric surface on the R3 domain, per-step drift over 256x64
chains on two corpora, decision flips over every cut, A's own saturation,
that only F/C ever differ, that the W0 corpus cannot flip the frequency
bar, and that chain_counterfactual's load-bearing fixture is load-bearing
under B1 only. The bench example times micro revision, replay_step
(dependent and batched) and cold-cache lookups, with a deliberately slow A
as its anti-vacuity arm. Tests only; no production change.

16 c-levels is the maximum table resolution, not numerical full precision:
D-RPF-TABLE-1 measures 16 levels differing from direct revision on ~97% of
cells and by up to 113 frequency codes in the broad domain. The 128 KiB and
32 MiB tables also do not fit L1 and L2 respectively on the bench host (48 KiB
L1d, 2 MiB L2 per core); the lib.rs table size was half the real one.
Comment changes only; no behaviour change.

The masks pin the v2 bit layout; under --no-default-features v1 places
plasticity at 49..51 and temporal at 52..63, which learn rewrites, so the
test failed there. Gated like ce64_isa_contract / ce64_isa_golden /

Assert both revised truth values for every plasticity pattern.

The existing exact truth test uses only the zero plasticity pattern. It does not protect a regression that affects nonzero patterns. This test claims bit-exact coverage across all eight patterns, so compare frequency_u8() and confidence_u8() with the expected truth::revision result in the loop.

Every resolution is 3.7-4.4x faster than A on the dependent replay but only
1.6-2.2x on the batch replay (B16 batch is ~1.6x). The conclusion now gives
