Even if we want to use country specific data for modelling and optimizing, at least for visualization we need to aggregate countries to regions to plot import and export between regions (but maybe also trade inside a region?). For that I propose using the UN geoscheme https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_geoscheme
Another different approach could be to use the regions from REMIND at PIK:
Remind_H12_unm49_iso3_region_mapping.json
I also prepared a slightly modified UN geoscheme version with some extractions based on the geoscheme, which allows a (somehow) coherent assignment of regions to geopolitical blocs
