Left quotation mark glyphs (“ and ‘) look too similar to their right counterparts (” and ’) #543

Description

@jothefiredragon

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
A clear and concise description of what the problem is. [E.g. "VSCode editor can't colorize bracket pair colors if brackets are ligatures..."]

  • I found that a few typefaces such as Recursive or Intel One Mono have their Left quotation mark glyphs (“ and ‘) to be too similar to their right counterparts (” and ’) which I found to be distracting.

Describe the solution you'd like
A clear and concise description of what you want to happen. Do other fonts already support this? If so, please specify examples.

  • A change in default left quotation mark glyphs (“ and ‘) along with their right counterparts (” and ’) or additional opentype feature that enable such glyphs in all 5 axis that the Recursive typeface provides. Personally I love the glyphs of the quotation marks in Fira Mono/Monaspace/Geist.
    Describe what you've tried so far
    A clear and concise description of what you've tried so far to access this feature, if applicable.
  • I squint my eye really hard and the still find it difficult to distinguish the left and right quotation marks in cases of typo.
    Additional context
    Add any other context or screenshots about the feature request here.
  • Should this decidedly be not fixed, at least I'd love to know why the quotation mark glyphs were designed as such.
