From ad809a335ea9b019cfac35b1f54ed2141db381b6 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Markus Neusinger <2921697+MarkusNeusinger@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Sun, 11 Oct 2026 13:51:37 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 1/7] feat(agents): step 1 of two, the user confirms the data before any plot The session keeps the confirmed dataset id; POST /v1/sessions/{sid}/dataset/confirm sets it, the pipeline answers not_ready: data_unconfirmed without it, a new dataset or a binding change (the PUT route or the root's set_bindings tool) drops it, and a library switch keeps it. The session block tells the root the state, the root asks the user to confirm in the data panel, the eval harness and the development fixture confirm on the developer's behalf. The design doc gets the section "Two steps: data first, then the plot" with the planned data operations (owner decision of 2026-10-11). The owner's principle: in any real analysis the data must be right first, or everything after it is wrong. + +Principles: + +1. Step 1 is a stop only when it has to be. A clean paste (the parser happy, the bindings complete, no ambiguity warning) shows the preview and the bindings with `.confirm()`, one click from the plot. Nobody with a clean CSV has to talk to an agent. +2. The model never writes data rows. It will choose operations from a fixed set, the server applies them with pandas to the stored canonical CSV, re-parses the result and stores it as the next dataset version with a change list and `.undo()`. Every model step shows what changed and needs the user's confirmation. Step 2 stays locked until the data is confirmed, on the server: the pipeline answers `not_ready` with `data_unconfirmed` (`load_inputs` in `agents/anyplot/pipeline.py`), so neither the model nor a stale page can start a plot on data the user has not looked at. +4. The most common real preparation is aggregation (single bookings into sums per month or category), so it belongs to the first set of operations. + +Built since 2026-10-11 (the gate): `POST /v1/sessions/{sid}/dataset/confirm` stores the confirmed dataset id in the session state (`anyplot.confirmed_dataset_id`); the pipeline runs only while it equals the current dataset id. A new dataset gets a new id, so a paste or a transcription's `.use()` drops the confirmation by itself; a binding change through the `PUT` route or the root's `set_bindings` tool clears it explicitly (`bindings_changed`); a library switch keeps the data, the bindings and the confirmation. The session block tells the root whether the data is confirmed, and the root answers `data_unconfirmed` by asking the user to confirm in the data panel, which it cannot do itself. The page shows a step header `1 data · 2 plot`, `.confirm()` after the bindings, and `.create_plot()` only after the confirmation; the eval harness and the development fixture confirm on the user's behalf, because their data is the developer's own. + +Planned next (phase 1 operations): a root tool `prepare_data(operations)` with at most five operations per call, each a Pydantic model the server validates against the current profile: `rename` (column, name), `drop_columns` (columns), `drop_rows` (`where` conditions on one column: `eq`, `ne`, `contains`, `is_missing`, `gt`, `lt`, at most three), `set_type` (number, datetime or text, with the date format and the decimal separator), `aggregate` (by one or two columns, a value column, `sum`, `mean`, `count`, `min` or `max`, and a `month`, `quarter` or `year` period for a datetime key), and `sort`. No expression language (an injection surface), no joins or pivots, no model-guessed fills. The result goes through `parse_dataset` again before it is stored, the dataset judge does not run again (no new text enters, only existing cells move or aggregate), and the store keeps the last five versions of a session. The chat's step-1 hint names the kinds of change the user can ask for; the harness gets a `prep` case set scored on exact operation match, the only non-deterministic part. + ### Request flow for "Find the right plot type" (phase 2) The compact `id|title|cat:tags` index (about 13.7k tokens, cache-eligible) is appended to the root's `static_instruction` in phase 2 only; step 1 is page-scoped and the index would cost those tokens on every root call. The root calls `find_specs` (AND across categories, OR within one, values checked against the tag vocabulary) and `get_spec_knowledge` (including the synced "What a good version looks like" bullets) for at most three candidates, derives filters from the pasted profile, and replies with `[[spec:id]]` tokens that the UI turns into cards. `select_spec` validates the choice and swaps the snapshot. Embeddings (pgvector 0.8.5 on Cloud SQL PostgreSQL 18 plus gemini-embedding on `eu`) are added only if evals show that the index is insufficient. diff --git a/docs/reference/api.md b/docs/reference/api.md index c7e2a68d46f..bc48f0b4f6a 100644 --- a/docs/reference/api.md +++ b/docs/reference/api.md @@ -478,7 +478,8 @@ The routes mirror the agents service's `/v1` API. The `.adapt()` overlay button in `SpecDetailView` does a full navigation to `/debug/agent?spec=&library=&language=`. 2. `POST /debug/agent/sessions {spec_id, library, locale}`. The BFF validates the spec and library against `core/constants.py` and the enabled libraries from anyplot-agents `GET /v1/status` (cached), loads a catalogue snapshot through `core/catalogue/queries.py` (title, description, data roles, notes, noqa-stripped code, library version), derives the user id, and forwards it. anyplot-agents normalises the code, runs the readiness scan and the SECURITY validator, and answers `422 not_eligible` for blocked pairs (the 13 map specs, validator failures, files without a `THEME` block or with a non-literal savefig target). anyplot-agents has no database access in phase 1. `GET /debug/agent/eligibility?spec=&library=` gives the button the same answer. 3. `POST .../dataset {text}` runs the deterministic parse and returns a 20-row preview, the `DatasetProfile`, default bindings and warnings. A deterministic pre-filter over every header and cell for text addressed to an AI, then the dataset judge with a data rubric, refuse instruction-like datasets. Both look for injection only: names, postal and e-mail addresses, phone numbers, web addresses and amounts are the user's data and plot like any other value. The judge sees every header and the same five sample rows and five top values the root and the adapter get, with cells in full, in parts of about 4,000 characters, one judge call per part (one part for every eval fixture). No other LLM call happens for a table. Text that is no table the parser can read (prose such as "a bar chart with dog 7, cat 3 and bird 4", a list typed one value per line; at most 4,000 characters, never a JSON array or object, which the parser reads or refuses itself) takes the transcriber path instead (owner rule of 2026-10-11): the pre-filter runs on the raw text, the judge model reads it under the `TranscribedTable` schema (`agents/anyplot/data/transcribe.py`, rubric `prompts/transcriber.md`: keep every value as written, invent nothing, a note on anything ambiguous), the table's CSV is parsed like a paste, and the route answers `transcribed: true` with that CSV, the preview and the note, storing nothing. The page shows the table for the user to confirm or discard, because a wrong reading makes everything after it wrong; confirming posts the CSV through this same route with `confirmed: true`, which skips only the free-text fallback (a one-column table would otherwise be read again), while the deterministic parse, the pre-filter, the judge and the store run as for any paste. -4. The user adjusts the bindings in dropdowns (`PUT .../bindings`) and clicks **Create plot**, which sends `POST .../messages {action: "create_plot"}`. The server sets the context variable `REQUEST_KIND=action`, so the judge is skipped, and sends a fixed message. Every turn first enters the run queue (see the bounds table below): the stream sends `ready`, then `status{step:"queued", position, waiting}` while the run waits, and the request deadline starts only when the run leaves the queue. -5. Root call 1 calls `plot_pipeline({})`. `PipelineArgs` has no spec, library or dataset field; those come from server-set session state, so neither the model nor an injection can redirect the pipeline. Its `theme` (`light` by default) is the one theme the run renders and the reviewer sees; the root sets `dark` only when the user asks for a dark plot, and keeps the latest version's theme, which its session block names, for a change. Without a dataset or with incomplete bindings the pipeline returns `PlotResult(status="not_ready", reason=...)` before any LLM call. +4. The pipeline streams `adapting`, `checking`, `rendering`, `reviewing` and `repairing` and always ends with `Event(output=PlotResult)`. A `None` output would raise `NodeInterruptedError`. 7. Root call 2 writes a short reply in the user's language. The UI fetches the PNG of the rendered theme (with the footer strip), `plot.py` and `data.csv` through the BFF. The light and dark switch calls `POST .../versions/{version}/render {theme}`, which renders the other theme from the version's stored run form (the same code and data) through the render backend and the host gates, with no adapter, no reviewer and no queue, and answers synchronously. 8. Free-text follow-ups go judge → root → `plot_pipeline(change_request, base="previous")`, `set_bindings`, or a code answer through `get_current_code`. The library pills call `POST sessions/{sid}/library`, which loads a new snapshot and keeps the dataset and bindings. The deploy smoke test expects 401 on `/debug/agent/status`. -- **SSE protocol `anyplot/1`**, translated from ADK events and never forwarded raw: `ready{v, run_id}`, sent before the run waits in the queue; `status{step:"queued", position, waiting}` while it waits, at once, on every change and every 15 s unchanged (`position` 1 runs next, `waiting` counts every queued entry, this one included); `status{step, attempt}` for the pipeline's steps; `message{text}` (root final text only), `plot{PlotResult}`, `refusal{code, text}`, `error{code, ref}` with codes `capacity` (also for a run that waited the queue's maximum), `deadline`, `guard_unavailable`, `upstream` and `internal`, and `done{llm_calls, tokens}`. The translator tolerates the ADK 2.x `node_info` and `output` fields. A user already over the daily budget gets `ready`, `refusal{code:"budget"}` and `done` without waiting in the queue. Because queued time does not count toward the agents service's deadline, the BFF restarts its own turn budget (`AGENT_REQUEST_TIMEOUT_S`) on every queued status, with the queue's 15 s heartbeat on top because the run may start that long before its first event, and on the first event after the wait. Nothing moves a turn past `AGENT_TURN_MAX_S` (890 s), which stays below anyplot-api's `--timeout=900`: a turn still queued when its run could no longer finish inside that cap ends with `error{code:"capacity"}`, and closing the upstream stream takes it out of the queue before it spends a token. +- **SSE protocol `anyplot/1`**, translated from ADK events and never forwarded raw: `ready{v, run_id}`, sent before the run waits in the queue; `status{step:"queued", position, waiting}` while it waits, at once, on every change and every 15 s unchanged (`position` 1 runs next, `waiting` counts every queued entry, this one included); `status{step, attempt}` for the pipeline's steps; `message{text}` (root final text only), `plot{PlotResult}`, `refusal{code, text}`, `error{code, ref}` with codes `capacity` (also for a run that waited the queue's maximum), `deadline`, `guard_unavailable`, `upstream` and `internal`, and `done{llm_calls, tokens, bindings, data_confirmed}` (the last two after a run: the session's bindings and whether the data is confirmed, so the page syncs its dropdowns and its step after a turn in which the root's `set_bindings` changed them). The **result card** (`app/src/sections/agent-chat/ResultCard.tsx`) reuses the plot page's overlay actions: the rendered plot shown inline as a blob URL, in a box that takes the loaded PNG's own aspect because the footer strip makes it taller than 16:9, with a light and dark switch that renders the other theme on demand through the theme toggle route, **Copy image** (Clipboard API `navigator.clipboard.write([new ClipboardItem({"image/png": blob})])`, falling back to download where unsupported), **Download PNG** for every rendered theme and **Open full size**; the adapted code in `CodeHighlighter` with **Copy code** (`useCopyCode`, one click), **Download plot.py** and **Download data.csv** (the pair runs unchanged); the change list and residual notes; the quick-feedback control; and a composer for refinements. Earlier versions stay reachable in the thread, each with its own image and code. The same card is reused unchanged when the feature goes public. `app/src/lib/sse.ts` parses the stream over `fetchWithAuth(...).body.getReader()`. The `.adapt()` button is the fourth overlay button in `app/src/sections/spec-detail/SpecDetailView.tsx`, wired through `onUseWithMyData` from `SpecPage.tsx`, and renders only when `CONFIG.features.agentChat && (CONFIG.isDev || adminHint) && eligible`, where `adminHint` is a localStorage flag (`anyplot.adminHint`, `app/src/utils/adminAuth.ts`) that `DebugPage` sets after `/debug/status` succeeds and clears on a refusal, and `eligible` comes from the eligibility route (`app/src/hooks/useAgentEligibility.ts`). It does a full navigation so Cloudflare Access can intercept, and public pages never probe `/api/debug/*`. As built on 2026-10-10: the dataset response lists the spec's roles (`{name, kinds, required, variadic, description}`), so every role gets a dropdown, a variadic family one per member (`y1`, `y2`, ...) plus an empty one for the next, kept contiguous on the client; a refused binding set answers with the check's lines, which the panel lists; the `plot` event carries the stored `version`, which addresses the artifact and theme toggle routes (see [Agent chat](../reference/api.md#agent-chat-admin-only-switched-off-by-default)); the page starts nothing while a turn, a theme render, a parse or a binding change is in flight, since the server would refuse it with `409 run_active`; Stop calls the cancel route and keeps the stream open until the server's `done` (at most 30 s), so a result stored just before the stop still arrives; the session is also deleted on `pagehide` with `keepalive`; a request without a readable answer (in production usually an expired Cloudflare Access session) reloads the page once, then offers a reload link; the queue position shows as a small counter in the chat's corner and as the first step of the timeline; the button adds `source=plot_page` to the URL, which the page reads for `agent_open` and then drops. `app/scripts/agent-bff-mock.mjs` serves the documented BFF routes and a scripted stream locally (for `scatter-basic` and the series family of `line-multi`), so the page can be driven in a browser without the API, the agents service or a model. - **Analytics** (enum properties only, documented in [Plausible](../reference/plausible.md#agent-chat-admin-only)): the pageview `/debug/agent`, `agent_open{library,source,spec}`, `agent_data_parsed{status,size_bucket}`, `agent_plot_rendered{library,status,repaired,spec}`, `agent_guardrail_block{reason}`, and `copy_code{page:'agent_chat',method:'agent'}`, all built; `agent_result_feedback{reaction,include_data}` comes with the quick-feedback control. diff --git a/docs/reference/api.md b/docs/reference/api.md index bc48f0b4f6a..b7996c5a52b 100644 --- a/docs/reference/api.md +++ b/docs/reference/api.md @@ -593,7 +593,7 @@ is in [Agent network design](../concepts/agent-network.md#footer-strip). | `plot` | `{status, reason, attempts, artifacts, changes, residual_defects, version}`; `version` only on `ok` and `needs_attention` | | `refusal` | `{code, text}`; `code` is `out_of_scope`, `needs_data` (the request needs data the service would have to fetch), `unsupported_content` or `budget`, and `text` is the fixed reply for it in the language the scope judge detects in your message, or in the session's locale for a refusal sent before the judge runs (`budget`, `unsupported_content`): English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch or Polish, and English for any other language | | `error` | `{code, ref}`; `code` is `capacity` (also when the turn waited the run queue's maximum of 600 seconds, or the BFF's turn cap ran out while it waited), `deadline`, `guard_unavailable`, `upstream`, or `internal`; `ref` is the request id | -| `done` | `{llm_calls, tokens}` | +| `done` | `{llm_calls, tokens, bindings?, data_confirmed?}`: after a run, the session's bindings and whether the data is confirmed, so the page syncs its dropdowns and its step after a turn in which the root's `set_bindings` changed them | The BFF re-frames the upstream stream instead of forwarding it. charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit The data panel ends step 1 with .confirm() once the bindings are complete; the confirmed line and .create_plot() follow. A new parse, a transcription or a binding change takes the panel back to step 1; a library switch keeps the confirmation. The done event's bindings and confirmation state sync the dropdowns and the step after a turn in which the root changed the bindings. A one-line header shows 1 data · 2 plot. The mock mirrors the confirm route, the gate and the sync, and plays the root's set_bindings on a "swap" message. A new dataset gets a new id, so a paste or a transcription's `.use()` drops the confirmation by itself, and so does any binding change through the `PUT` route or the root's `set_bindings` tool, also one that lands between the confirmation's read and its write, because the stored fingerprint then names bindings the session no longer holds; a library switch keeps the data, the bindings and the confirmation. Planned next (phase 1 operations): a root tool `prepare_data(operations)` with at most five operations per call, each a Pydantic model the server validates against the current profile: `rename` (column, name), `drop_columns` (columns), `drop_rows` (`where` conditions on one column: `eq`, `ne`, `contains`, `is_missing`, `gt`, `lt`, at most three), `set_type` (number, datetime or text, with the date format and the decimal separator), `aggregate` (by one or two columns, a value column, `sum`, `mean`, `count`, `min` or `max`, and a `month`, `quarter` or `year` period for a datetime key), and `sort`. No expression language (an injection surface), no joins or pivots, no model-guessed fills. The result goes through `parse_dataset` again before it is stored, the dataset judge does not run again (no new text enters, only existing cells move or aggregate), and the store keeps the last five versions of a session. The budgets, limits and deadlines (the `AGENT_*` budgets, `AGENT_MAX_LLM_CALLS`, the run queue, the render and request bounds) are not set, so the deployed code's settings defaults apply (`agents/anyplot/settings.py`, see [Bounds](#bounds)) and a change to them is a reviewed code change; `ADK_MAX_LLM_CALLS` is not set either, because every run of the service passes its own `RunConfig`. On anyplot-renderer: `ENVIRONMENT=production`, `RENDERER_ALLOWED_CALLERS=,[,]`, `RENDERER_AUDIENCES=[,]`, never a tag URL, which Cloud Run does not accept as an audience; the limits keep their defaults (`agents/renderer/settings.py`). On anyplot-api: `AGENT_ENABLED` (true since 2026-10-11 through the deploy-api trigger's `_AGENT_ENABLED`; false ships the routes dark, answering 404), `AGENT_SERVICE_URL` (the agents service's URL, `_AGENT_SERVICE_URL`), and `AGENT_USER_ID_KEY` from Secret Manager (bound since 2026-10-11; the BFF answers 404 while any of the three is unset, so a deploy never breaks). On the app: `VITE_ENABLE_AGENT_CHAT`, a build-time flag that tree-shakes the chunk. - **Sessions and artifacts.** Phase 1 uses `InMemorySessionService`, `InMemoryArtifactService` and in-memory dataset and render stores; they are consistent because `max-instances=1`, and scale-to-zero shows "session expired". Phase 2 moves to `DatabaseSessionService` in a separate database `anyplot_agents` on `anyplot-db` with its own user and an hourly purge of sessions older than 24 h, because `alembic/env.py` has no `include_object` filter and ADK's `create_all` tables would read as drift; artifacts go to `GcsArtifactService` on a private EU bucket with a 1-day lifecycle, never `anyplot-images`. - **BFF** in `api/routers/agent.py`: `APIRouter(prefix="/debug/agent", dependencies=[Depends(require_admin)])`. POST requests need `Content-Type: application/json`, `X-Anyplot-Client: agent-chat/1` and an allowed Origin. ID tokens come from `google.oauth2.id_token.fetch_id_token` (skipped for localhost). Routes mirror `/v1` plus `GET eligibility`, `POST sessions/{sid}/feedback`, and the triage routes `GET /debug/agent/cases`, `GET /debug/agent/cases/{id}` and `PATCH /debug/agent/cases/{id}`. +- **SSE protocol `anyplot/1`**, translated from ADK events and never forwarded raw: `ready{v, run_id}`, sent before the run waits in the queue; `status{step:"queued", position, waiting}` while it waits, at once, on every change and every 15 s unchanged (`position` 1 runs next, `waiting` counts every queued entry, this one included); `status{step, attempt}` for the pipeline's steps; `message{text}` (root final text only), `plot{PlotResult}`, `refusal{code, text}`, `error{code, ref}` with codes `capacity` (also for a run that waited the queue's maximum), `deadline`, `guard_unavailable`, `upstream` and `internal`, and `done{llm_calls, tokens, bindings?, data_confirmed?}` (the last two are optional: after a run they carry the session's bindings and whether the data is confirmed, so the page syncs its dropdowns and its step after a turn in which the root's `set_bindings` changed them; a turn refused before the queue, such as the budget refusal, and a session gone meanwhile omit them). - **Analytics** (enum properties only, documented in [Plausible](../reference/plausible.md#agent-chat-admin-only)): the pageview `/debug/agent`, `agent_open{library,source,spec}`, `agent_data_parsed{status,size_bucket}`, `agent_plot_rendered{library,status,repaired,spec}`, `agent_guardrail_block{reason}`, and `copy_code{page:'agent_chat',method:'agent'}`, all built; `agent_result_feedback{reaction,include_data}` comes with the quick-feedback control. diff --git a/tests/unit/agents/runtime/test_service_flow.py b/tests/unit/agents/runtime/test_service_flow.py index e5f41fa9a12..429623ea486 100644 --- a/tests/unit/agents/runtime/test_service_flow.py +++ b/tests/unit/agents/runtime/test_service_flow.py @@ -1803,6 +1803,33 @@ async def test_done_carries_the_bindings_the_root_changed_and_the_dropped_confir assert done["data_confirmed"] is True and done["bindings"][0] == {"role": "x", "column": "Exam Score"} +async def test_a_delayed_confirmation_never_covers_bindings_the_user_did_not_see(client: httpx.AsyncClient) -> None: + """The confirmation is a fingerprint of the dataset and the bindings it was computed on. + + A confirm request that read the old bindings and writes after a binding change lands + stores the old fingerprint, so the new bindings stay unconfirmed (Copilot on #12131). + """ + from agents.anyplot.session_state import CONFIRMED, confirm_delta + + sid = await open_session(client) + before = read_session(await _session_state(client, sid)) + assert before is not None and before.data_confirmed + stale_delta = confirm_delta(before) # the confirmation as computed on the bindings the user saw + + swapped = await client.put( + f"/v1/sessions/{sid}/bindings", + headers=HEADERS, + json=[{"role": "x", "column": "Exam Score"}, {"role": "y", "column": "Study Hours"}], + ) + assert swapped.status_code == 200 + runtime = app.dependency_overrides[get_runtime]() + session = await runtime.session(USER, sid) + await runtime.write_state(session, stale_delta) # the delayed write lands after the change + + after = read_session(await _session_state(client, sid)) + assert after is not None and after.confirmed == stale_delta[CONFIRMED] and not after.data_confirmed + + async def test_confirm_needs_a_dataset(client: httpx.AsyncClient) -> None: sid = await open_session(client, with_data=False) response = await client.post(f"/v1/sessions/{sid}/dataset/confirm", headers=HEADERS) From f7f3a45eee6dee81fad7691074e0f5c8aa4362e0 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Markus Neusinger <2921697+MarkusNeusinger@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Sun, 11 Oct 2026 14:34:47 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 7/7] fix(agents): the confirmation fingerprint ignores the order of the bindings The bindings are a set of role-to-column assignments, so they are sorted before hashing; the same assignments in another order keep the confirmation (Copilot round 2 on #12131).
