Q: in the builtin documentation files for the standard library, I see ---#DES '<thing>' lines, but can't find any mention of them in the documentation. What do these lines actually do?

These annotations aren't the same as the annotations we may use to annotate our code with LuaCATS. The ---#DES '<thing>' lines get replaced by localized versions of descriptions for each locale. IIRC, the '<thing>' comes from the locale/lang-code/meta.lua file.
