      It was off for as long as it pointed at upstream. The check reads a version and
      offers a download, and both came from sourcegit-scm: since this fork carries the
      version number of the release it branched from, the day upstream published a
      newer one the check would have announced it and sent the user to fetch the stock
      application over this one.

      Three things had to move before it could be turned on, and all three are named in
      Models.ForkVersion:

        - what it reads, now this fork's releases API rather than upstream's site;
        - where the download button leads, now this fork's releases page;
        - how versions compare. Upstream parses the tag as a System.Version, which
          throws on vYYYY.MM-3b.N and would have left the check silently dead.

      Setting this back to true still works and disables everything above, including
      the menu entry and the preference, through DISABLE_UPDATE_DETECTION.
